With much of the recent discussion focused on the potential release of the PlayStation 6 in 2027, and the current challenges all electronics companies are facing with memory (RAM) shortages, Sony’s plans for a new handheld gaming device have been largely overlooked.
I’ve been hearing whispers about this new hardware for over a year and a half now, and it’s starting to look like it’s actually being developed – it’s not just a rumor anymore! It seems pretty legit.
A trusted source on the NeoGAF forum, KeplerL2 – who accurately leaked details about the PS5 Pro before Sony announced it – claims that the handheld gaming device is still on track for release next year.
It appears 2027 will be a significant year for PlayStation, with reports suggesting both the PlayStation 6 console and a new handheld device are planned for release.
Look, things are always subject to change, especially with the economy being what it is, and I’m a little worried about potential RAM shortages thanks to all the AI development. But what I’m hearing definitely lines up with what Moore’s Law Is Dead has been saying – and they’re usually spot-on when it comes to hardware news, so that’s reassuring.
It’s still uncertain how the PS6 will fit into Sony’s plans. Will it be able to play all PlayStation games, but with reduced graphics quality, or will only certain games be specifically designed to work with it? How Sony explains this to players will be crucial.
Sony recently introduced a low-power mode for the PS5. Some believe this feature isn’t just for saving energy, but is also a way to test how well games run on a less powerful version of the console.
If Sony releases a product like this at an affordable price – which is challenging these days – it could be very successful.
The Nintendo Switch and devices like the Steam Deck have redefined portable gaming. Unlike the PS Vita, this new handheld can access the same game library as Sony’s PlayStation consoles, which should help it avoid similar struggles.
That’s assuming, of course, it’s affordable and supports a good range of software.
