Cobie Smulders, who hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for three years, is open to returning as Maria Hill. She first played the SHIELD agent in 2012’s The Avengers, but her role ended somewhat unceremoniously in the 2023 Disney+ series Secret Invasion. She’s ready to reprise the character if Marvel Studios wants her back.
Okay, so everyone’s freaking out about whether this character is really gone, but honestly, it’s a superhero story, right? People come back from the dead all the time in these things. Plus, Cobie Smulders herself just talked about it and honestly seemed totally chill about whatever happens. It makes you think, doesn’t it?
Cobie Smulders expressed her enthusiasm for reprising her role as Maria Hill. She acknowledged the vast number of story possibilities within the Marvel universe and understands her character is just one piece of it, appreciating the time she spent playing her. While she’s eager to return if given the chance, she’d also be happy to see a new, perhaps younger, actress take on the role, and would be excited to see what they did with it. She trusts Marvel’s creative team to make the best choices for the future of the character and the universe.
What Happened to Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
She was presented as the second-in-command at SHIELD. This remained true until the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when it was revealed that Hydra had secretly taken over SHIELD, essentially ending the organization’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (unless you continued watching Agents of SHIELD).
Hill previously worked for Tony Stark at Stark Industries and later rejoined Nick Fury. She was briefly killed by Thanos’ snap but was brought back to life. While attempting to thwart a Skrull extremist group’s plan to start a global war, she was shot by Gravik, the group’s leader who had disguised himself as Fury.
Will Maria Hill Return in Avengers: Doomsday?
Secret Invasion wasn’t only the last time we saw Smulders as Maria Hill. It was also t.
The cast reveal for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday included some notable changes, like Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom and Chris Evans unexpectedly reprising his role as Steve Rogers. However, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson weren’t featured in the initial cast announcement, and there haven’t been any updates about their potential return since then.
Secret Invasion is streaming now on Disney+.
