It’s that time of year again – Friday the 13th! Honestly, it feels like it snuck up on me, and it got me thinking about how much I love the whole series. If you’re into horror, though, and want something a little different, there’s another great franchise that’s connected to these classic slasher films that I always recommend.
Many people probably think this refers to the 2003 movie Freddy vs. Jason, where Jason Voorhees fought Freddy Krueger. But dedicated horror fans might recall a lesser-known connection between the Friday the 13th films and The Evil Dead.
Friday The 13th’s Jason Voorhees Is An Evil Dead Deadite
The Friday the 13th series, famous for Jason Voorhees’ violent attacks, and the Evil Dead films, known for their over-the-top horror and dark humor, actually share the same fictional universe.
In the ninth installment of the horror series, despite dying in the opening scene, the killer Jason continues his reign of terror by possessing the bodies of others. Teenager Steve Freeman (John D. LeMay) investigates, determined to understand how Jason can seemingly keep coming back to life and uncover the secret behind his enduring evil.
Investigators discovered the Necronomicon Ex Mortis – a gruesome book bound in human skin and written with blood – at the killer’s childhood home. This is the same book that, in the 1981 film The Evil Dead, was used to unintentionally revive evil spirits. This suggests that Pamela Voorhees, the killer from the original Friday the 13th, likely used the book in an attempt to bring her son back to life, but instead turned him into a host for a destructive power.
Essentially, Jason Voorhees functions like a “Deadite” – a term from the movie Evil Dead II (1987) for humans taken over by demons. While he doesn’t talk as much as the monsters Ash battles, he’s just as violent and terrifying.
The Next Friday The 13th Movie Should Acknowledge The Evil Dead Connection
In Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, a brief glimpse of the Necronomicon marked the only on-screen connection between the Friday the 13th and Evil Dead franchises. The film also teased potential crossovers with characters from A Nightmare on Elm Street, though these never fully materialized.
The idea for this big horror team-up started as a potential live-action sequel to Freddy vs. Jason. When Bruce Campbell decided not to participate, it was adapted into a comic book and released in 2007. But could we still see a Friday the 13th and Evil Dead crossover movie someday?
Okay, so here’s the buzz: apparently, a thirteenth film in the series is in the works as of October 2025. And it’s a great time for horror fans, because the Evil Dead universe is really expanding – we’re getting two new standalone sequels, Evil Dead Burn in 2026 and Evil Dead Wrath hitting screens next year. Honestly, with both franchises doing so well, it feels like the perfect moment for a crossover – something bigger and bolder than we’ve seen before.
Bruce Campbell has hinted that the Evil Dead series could continue forever, and he thinks it would be amazing to see Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th become part of that universe. He even suggests this crossover should happen in the next Friday the 13th movie, potentially setting up a future Evil Dead film, similar to how Marvel connects its movies.
As a huge fan of both Friday the 13th and Evil Dead, I’m dying for a crossover! The biggest problem right now is actually the legal stuff. It’s complicated because the rights to Jason are split. Sean Cunningham, the producer, owns the version of Jason we all know and love with the hockey mask, but Victor Miller, the writer of the first Friday the 13th, owns the original story and characters. Luckily, New Line Cinema, who now owns the Evil Dead franchise, still owns the Friday the 13th title as a trademark, which gives me some hope that this could actually happen!
Adding to everything else, the original actor who played Ash has been retired for a long time, and many believe it’s wrong to replace him. It feels almost disrespectful to have these franchises finally team up in a movie without him. However, Hollywood has overcome obstacles before, and if the new actor is truly dedicated to these stories and has the drive to do them justice, the crossover could be fantastic.
