Akira Toriyama’s work, particularly Dragon Ball, is famous for its intense, action-packed battles. Conflict is central to the series, and many storylines build towards huge fights that can stretch on for many episodes.
Just because a fight in Dragon Ball is long doesn’t automatically make it good, but the series generally knows which battles deserve more screen time. Still, some Dragon Ball fights end too quickly and don’t really get going. A few of these unremarkable battles could have been truly epic if they had just been extended a bit.
Vegeta Defeats Universe 6’s Frost Without Even Making Contact
As a huge Dragon Ball Super fan, I always thought the Tournament of Destroyers was a fun setup for the epic Tournament of Power! It’s where we first meet Frost, Universe 6’s version of Frieza, and he actually manages to beat both Piccolo and Goku! Talk about a surprise! But it turns out he was cheating the whole time, using a hidden needle to poison his opponents. Once everyone found out about his dirty tricks, Whis stepped in and took him down immediately – it was so satisfying to watch!
Vegeta’s punch completely missed, and he was defeated by Frost’s energy blast alone – a truly embarrassing knockout. It’s a shame Vegeta didn’t get to fully unleash his anger on Frost, as their later fight in the Tournament of Power was a much more satisfying rematch.
Goku’s Violent Revenge On Drum Ended Too Soon
Demon King Piccolo is already a powerful enemy, and he makes things even worse by creating several devoted and evil followers to do his bidding. One of Goku’s most brutal attacks in the original Dragon Ball is when he defeats Drum by powerfully kicking him in the head, causing him to explode.
Seeing Goku lose control and give in to his anger is genuinely scary, and Drum’s death is a pivotal moment for him. The fight’s quickness is what makes it so impactful. It could have been longer, though – if Drum had regenerated like other Namekians. They could have battled back and forth, with Drum healing and Goku attacking, until Goku finally defeated him completely, making regeneration impossible.
Chiatzo Deserved Better Than His Tragic DBZ Death
Chiaotzu is a fascinating character from the original Dragon Ball series. However, as Dragon Ball Z gets more intense, he’s often relegated to a minor role. His last significant contribution happens during the . The heroes are already reeling from the unexpected death of Yamcha when this occurs.
Chiaotzu’s death happens quickly and feels unnecessary when his desperate attempt to defeat Nappa fails completely. While his fate was likely sealed, the scene lacks a bit of respect. It would have been better if Chiaotzu had a moment to actually use his abilities – maybe briefly holding Nappa back with his psychic powers – before Vegeta ultimately finished him off.
Dabura’s Demon King Legacy Crumbles Against Majin Buu
Dabura is a strong fighter who serves Babidi. He’s as powerful as Perfect Cell and has a variety of dangerous energy attacks and fighting skills. One of his attacks, Stone Spit, can turn anyone it hits to stone. However, when Buu breaks free from Babidi’s control, Dabura is unable to stop him. Dabura’s attacks, including his Evil Spear, aren’t effective against Buu, who can easily change shape and heal from injuries.
Buu quickly turns Dabura into a cookie and eats him, which is a disappointing end for such a powerful villain. The fight felt rushed; it could have been more drawn out by having Dabura use his Stone Spit attack, making him think he was winning, only for Buu to reform from the broken stone.
Goku Makes a Joke Out of the Ginyu Force’s Lightweights
Goku’s dramatic entrance on Planet Namek echoes his exciting return to fighting during the Saiyan Saga. His easy defeat of the powerful Recoome is very similar to how he beat Nappa before. After dealing with Recoome, Goku quickly handles Burter and Jeice, even when they both attack him at once.
This scene is designed to show just how powerful Goku is and hint that he might be a Super Saiyan. However, the defeats happen very quickly, even for a strong team. The following fight against Captain Ginyu is also surprisingly brief, especially considering how long battles usually are in Dragon Ball Z.
Vegeta & Pui Pui’s Fight Is One Big Tease
Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan face off against three of Babidi’s powerful warriors inside his spaceship, leading to quick battles. Vegeta’s first fight is against Pui Pui, and Babidi gives Pui Pui an edge by increasing the gravity to ten times that of Planet Zoon. It’s ironic that Pui Pui thinks this will defeat Vegeta, considering Vegeta regularly trains in gravity 450 times stronger than Earth’s.
Vegeta quickly defeats Pui Pui, just as Goku’s fight with Yakon was also short and decisive. The series seems to be speeding through these battles, likely because it’s building towards bigger threats. Pui Pui was a unique opponent and deserved a more developed fight, similar to the surprising energy of Goku’s battle with Yakon.
Hit’s Time-Skip Technique Backs Goku Into a Corner Too Quickly
The tournament between Universes 7 and 6 has a lot of unnecessary action and brief fights. The battle between Goku and Hit stands out as the most significant and memorable match. However, even this fight feels rushed and doesn’t fully develop its potential. It’s forgivable though, because it’s where Goku first uses his powerful Super Saiyan Blue and Kaio-Ken combination.
The second fight between Goku and Hit was exciting, and came close to being truly amazing. It delivered on the promise of their first encounter, with a more intense but deliberately paced battle. This allowed key plot points and unresolved questions to build suspense and connect smoothly.
Good Buu’s Battle Against Evil Buu Could’ve Been Longer
When Majin Buu sees an innocent dog killed, he transforms in a frightening way. This transformation creates Evil Buu, fueled by anger and hatred, who then battles Good Buu. The fight is a surprisingly fun and imaginative turn of events, ending with Evil Buu reflecting Good Buu’s Chocolate Beam back at him, consuming the energy, and becoming Super Buu.
The fight between Good Buu and Evil Buu is actually much briefer in the manga – it’s hardly a fight at all. The anime version adds some length and flair, like the Kamehameha, but it still feels incomplete. Considering how long the Buu Saga was, some filler isn’t surprising. It would have been great to see both Buus going through all of the Z Fighters’ signature moves before Good Buu ultimately absorbed Evil Buu.
Beerus Humbles Super Saiyan 3 Goku With His Godly Strength
At the beginning of the series, the Z-Fighters are no match for the incredibly powerful Beerus. Things change when Goku reaches the level of Super Saiyan God. Before achieving this new power, Goku tries to fight Beerus using his usual strength, and this early storyline is just the right length – exciting without overstaying its welcome.
Goku transforms through all his Super Saiyan forms, but none of them are effective against Beerus. Beerus, unimpressed, easily defeats Goku while he’s in his Super Saiyan 3 form with just a flick to the head, causing Goku significant pain. Super Saiyan 3 isn’t featured much in Dragon Ball Super, and this fight could have been a good opportunity to showcase Goku’s progress with that form before he was ultimately defeated.
Goku’s Effortless Win Against Nappa Gets Lost in Shock Value
Goku’s return to Earth to rescue his friends from Nappa is one of the most exciting parts of Dragon Ball Z. Goku is eager to show off his increased power, and viewers are just as curious to see how much stronger he’s become. The moment when Goku defeats Nappa with a single punch – after Nappa has already defeated Earth’s strongest fighters – is truly impressive.
Goku tries to be merciful and repeatedly offers Nappa a chance to surrender before Vegeta ultimately kills him. Goku needs to defeat Nappa and prove he’s the stronger fighter. The battle could also be extended with unexpected moves or by restoring energy with Senzu Beans.
