Microsoft entered the video game console world in 2001 with the original Xbox, which proved to be a big hit and helped the company expand into new areas. Since then, Microsoft has released many consoles – including the recent ASUS ROG Ally X – but we decided to focus on its traditional home consoles and rank them. We based our ranking on the quality of games available for each system, how popular they were with players, and their overall influence on the gaming industry. To keep things focused, we’ve only considered the main console releases, not smaller variations like ‘slim’ models, and have narrowed it down to six.
6) Xbox One

The Xbox One wasn’t a big hit with gamers. Microsoft tried to turn it into more than just a gaming console, focusing heavily on entertainment features. It launched with the unpopular Kinect sensor, which most players didn’t want. Ultimately, Microsoft sold around 58 million Xbox One consoles, which was significantly fewer than the PlayStation 4, which sold over 117 million. Many of the best games available on Xbox One were also available on PlayStation 4, making the Xbox One less appealing to potential buyers.
5) Xbox Series S

Microsoft released two versions of its latest Xbox: the more powerful Xbox Series X and the more affordable Xbox Series S. The Series S is cheaper because it doesn’t have a disc drive – you can only download games. While some gamers like this all-digital approach, others miss being able to use their physical game copies. Since launching in 2020, the Series S hasn’t been a huge seller, but it has actually outsold the Series X by a significant margin – three to one. Despite not being the most popular console, it offers a strong library of digital games, including older titles thanks to backward compatibility.
4) Xbox One X

We’ve included the Xbox One X despite leaving out most other Xbox consoles, because it represents a real leap forward. It’s an upgraded version of the original Xbox One, offering substantial improvements in performance and visuals – it can even play games in 4K. Existing games also look and run much better on the One X. Plus, it still plays games from older Xbox generations. It’s more than just an upgrade; it feels like a completely new and improved console.
3) Xbox

The original Xbox holds a special place in many gamers’ hearts, largely due to fond memories of its fantastic exclusive games. While it didn’t outsell the PlayStation 2 or Nintendo GameCube – coming in second place – it was a truly great console. Though its controller was famously large, it actually influenced the design of future controllers. Microsoft didn’t produce the Xbox for very long, quickly moving on to the next generation, but it still sold 24 million units. More importantly, it proved Microsoft was a serious contender in the gaming world – a huge accomplishment for a first console.
2) Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X is the more powerful counterpart to the Xbox Series S, and it includes a disc drive. It delivers better performance, supports 4K gaming, and is slightly faster thanks to its increased memory and processing power. Like the Series S, it can play many games from the Xbox One. It also offers significantly more storage for digital games – two to four times more than the Series S. However, all this extra power comes at a higher price, which is why it hasn’t been as popular as the Series S. While exact numbers aren’t public, combined sales for both the Xbox Series X and Series S are around 34 million consoles.
1) Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 is widely considered Microsoft’s best console. It was a huge step up from the original Xbox, offering robust online play and features the first system lacked. With over 85 million units sold, it’s also been the most successful Xbox to date. The 360 boasted a much-improved controller, a large and highly-regarded game library, and significantly impacted the gaming market by pushing innovation and competition for over a decade. Microsoft’s long support for the console – 11 years – demonstrates their confidence in its quality and appeal.
