Anne Hathaway is reprising her role in a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, and fans are curious about what happened to her character’s boyfriend, Nate.
Released 20 years ago, The Devil Wears Prada was a huge hit and has become a beloved classic. The film not only made over $320 million worldwide, but also earned Meryl Streep an Academy Award nomination and had a lasting impact on how we view fashion and work environments.
While The Devil Wears Prada 2 is coming to theaters on May 1st, many fans are wondering what happened to Nate, played by Adrian Grenier, Andy Sachs’s former boyfriend. Grenier recently explained to Page Six why he wasn’t asked to return for the sequel, and it seems there’s a story behind his absence. He shared that he would have been happy to be involved, but there was more to the decision than just a simple phone call.
Everyone seems to enjoy the movie, even those of us who weren’t in it. I was definitely hoping to be part of the sequel, but I get that my character, Nate, wasn’t popular with everyone. That said, I think it opens the door for a potential spin-off series focusing on him.
Audiences didn’t like Nate, the character played by Grenier, finding him unsupportive, immature, and self-centered. This happened as Andy became more focused on her career and the demanding expectations of her boss, Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep). Grenier himself admitted in a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly that his character had flaws and understood why viewers felt that way.
I didn’t fully understand the character’s complexities and deeper meaning until people started reacting negatively to him online and criticizing him. That’s when I began to see things I’d missed.
I was really surprised by all the memes that surfaced. It hadn’t dawned on me until I reflected on it, and maybe that’s because I was just as naive as Nate back then. He was often very self-centered – everything revolved around him. He didn’t make much effort to support Andy’s career, which was disappointing.

The movie The Devil Wears Prada ends with Nate and Andy reconnecting just before he announces he’s taking a job in Chicago, causing them to separate. While a potential sequel would likely show Andy excelling in her career as she returns to work for Miranda Priestly, it’s uncertain what will happen with her love life. However, a great aspect of the story is seeing strong women succeed independently, without needing a romantic relationship to define them.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be available to watch in theaters on May 1.
