The Oscars has seen its fair share of celebrity couples come and go over the years.
Everyone is watching Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, especially with his Oscar nomination, but they’re just the latest in a long history of famous couples who’ve attended the Academy Awards.
Those who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s likely remember Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron. They were a popular couple who appeared at the Oscars in 2009, fresh off the success of the 2008 movie High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
The couple wore matching black and white outfits to the event, not long before they decided to split up after a year.
Millennials often remember celebrity couples like Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr., and Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman – all of whom were once seen together at the Academy Awards.
There have also been pairings, however, that have been lost to the pop-culture memory banks.
I always find it fascinating learning about celebrity relationships before they became famous couples! For example, I remember being surprised to discover Emily Blunt and Michael Bublé were together for three years, even attending the Oscars hand-in-hand in 2007. And before Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen were a power couple, Gisele was with Leonardo DiCaprio for six years! She was actually with him at the 2005 Academy Awards when he was nominated for The Aviator. It’s wild to think about how things could have turned out differently!

As a longtime celebrity watcher, I definitely remember the power couples of the past! I mean, who could forget Diane Lane and Josh Brolin, or Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas? And of course, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger were everywhere back then. Those were some iconic relationships!
It’s not surprising that established stars, those with long careers, have been accompanied to events by former partners over the years.
Over the years, Brad Pitt has been to the Oscars with several partners, including Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie. Similarly, Jennifer Lopez has attended the ceremony with Marc Anthony, Ben Affleck, and Alex Rodriguez.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who starred in High School Musical and previously dated, did walk the Oscars red carpet together. This happened in 2009, and they looked fantastic as always.

Oh my gosh, Tom and Katie! Just thinking about them takes me back! They were everything from 2006 to 2012, and their little Suri was the cutest! I know it didn’t last, but honestly, they always seemed like a dream couple, you know? Perfect, just perfect!

Fans were surprised in January 2022 when the couple announced they were ending their 16-year relationship. Although they’ve remained friendly, many are saddened by the thought of no longer seeing them together at public events.

Kristin Davis and Robert Downey Jr. dated from 1984 to 1991, when they were both just 18 years old. Looking at their outfits from the Oscars during that time, it’s clear they were big fans of 1980s fashion.

As a lifestyle observer, I always found George Clooney’s pre-marriage days fascinating! He had a string of lovely companions on his arm at events like the Oscars – Kelly Brook, for example, was a memorable date.

Before hosting at the 2019 Oscars, the actress from Hustlers walked the red carpet with her baseball-player fiancé. They broke up almost two years later.

The talk-show host has a history of being in prominent relationships, even before she married Portia de Rossi. Everyone still remembers Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a glamorous couple, and many miss seeing them together on the red carpet and hearing about their relationship, even years after their divorce in 2016.

Before becoming famously married to Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman was married to Tom Cruise. This photo shows them together at the 1991 Academy Awards.

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams began a celebrated Hollywood romance after meeting on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2005. Though they split up shortly before his death in 2008, many fans still remember them as a tragically short-lived love story.

These two weren’t leads in a movie romance—though we’d definitely enjoy seeing that!—but they did date for almost four years in the late ’90s, and they were a beautiful couple.

We were used to seeing this couple together for over a decade, but they announced they were separating in 2015.

I’ve been following Leonardo DiCaprio for years, and it’s always been clear he has a type! While he’s still known for dating models now, there was a really interesting period from 1999 to 2005 where he was consistently with one particular woman – a model, of course! It was a noticeable phase in his dating history.

Between 2005 and 2014, this supermodel and singer were a hugely popular couple, and people still enjoy looking at photos of them together as husband and wife.

It took a while, but they finally got married in ’95, when she was 27. It wasn’t meant to be forever – they divorced in 2001 – but honestly, their relationship is still iconic. I’ll never forget it!

Even though the breakup happened back in 2016 and Diane now shares a child with Norman Reedus, we still can’t help but wish they were together. There was just a special connection between them that fans always rooted for.

The actors shared a 14-year marriage filled with both personal and professional highlights. They had two children, worked on successful projects, and were always a stylish and admired couple on the red carpet.

We absolutely love this look! It brings back memories of when she was married to the rock star. They also have a son together named Ryder, and this is a great throwback photo from their relationship.

Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke were married from 1998 to 2005 and were a popular couple, often seen supporting each other at events.

Everyone rooted for these two actors after they starred in Alfie together in 2004, hoping they’d find lasting happiness. Sadly, their relationship ended after a period of ups and downs. At least we’ll always have those memorable moments from the Oscars!

Diane Lane and Josh Brolin are both well-known actors, and they were a particularly striking couple during their marriage.

Oh my gosh, they were the couple of the ’90s, seriously! It was such a whirlwind romance, it didn’t last long, but thankfully we have those incredible red carpet photos to obsess over forever. I mean, just look at them! They were perfect.
