As a huge Buffy fan, I was really disappointed to hear that the reboot isn’t happening right now. Sarah Michelle Gellar let us know that Hulu decided not to move forward with the pilot that Chloé Zhao was directing. It’s a bummer, though there’s still a tiny bit of hope for a Buffy series eventually. But the actress who was going to be the new Slayer just shared a first look at what the cancelled show could have been, and a glimpse of her character, which is…well, it’s something!
The planned series, called Buffy: New Sunnydale, would have featured Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers alongside a new slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Following the announcement that the show wouldn’t be moving forward, Armstrong posted a picture of herself in costume as Nova on Instagram, adding a black heart and the caption “your slayer.” You can see the image below.
Is There Still Hope For A New Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series?

It’s a shame this new installment of the series won’t be made, especially since there was a lot of excitement building around it. Things picked up when Gellar announced she’d be back, and it seemed like a blend of a true reboot and a continuation of the original, with both familiar and new faces.
Deadline reports that while the pilot wasn’t quite right, Hulu considered revising it as recently as this week. Ultimately, however, they’ve decided not to proceed with the series.
Despite the cancellation, Hulu remains interested in the Buffy franchise and is exploring new options for its future. While anything is possible, a simple continuation of this recently developed series – which Sarah Michelle Gellar, Emma Caulfield Ford, and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face) were clearly invested in – seems unlikely to happen now.
It’s possible the series will ultimately be completely restarted, which isn’t necessarily a negative outcome. However, fans will probably always remember this version as the one that didn’t quite make it. Even if the new series is successful, people will likely compare it to this abandoned project, making the future of the franchise something to watch closely.
