Ava DuVernay is shining the spotlight on her love.
The director of Selma revealed her relationship by appearing with her boyfriend on the red carpet at the 2026 Oscars.
At the Oscars ceremony on March 15th, Essence magazine asked Ava to complete the sentence, “I am proud of myself for…” She happily shared, while holding her partner’s hand, that she was proud to be at the Oscars with him.
Smiling at him, she continued, “The man I’ve kept secret for so long is finally here.”
Ava and her boyfriend looked like a perfect pair at the event, with her stunning navy blue Louis Vuitton gown complementing his classic navy tuxedo.
Following the ceremony, Ava and her partner continued the celebration at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, where they were photographed holding hands on the red carpet.
This isn’t the first hint Ava has given about this new phase of her life; she and her partner first appeared together on Instagram while ringing in the new year.
On December 31st, Ava shared a photo on Instagram of herself and her boyfriend, smiling and close together. She captioned it with a reflection on the year, writing about the people she’s connected with, the journeys she’s taken, and the places she’s visited – calling them some of the best moments of 2025.

The creator of When They See Us has often discussed her personal choices, including her decision to remain unmarried and not have children.
She explained on the Unusual Suspects podcast with Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell in January 2025 that she wasn’t looking for that kind of partner. She believes someone who wants a spouse to simply support their ambitions will likely struggle to find one.
