5 Great Batman Gadgets That Have Never Been Used in the DC Movies

Bruce Wayne, the man behind Batman, doesn’t have superpowers. Instead, he protects Gotham City using his intelligence, detective skills, and vast wealth. While his intellect and investigative abilities are often shown in the movies, they really emphasize his use of gadgets. He’s famous for tools like the Batarang, and films have also featured devices like the Ultrasonic Bat Beacon (in Batman Returns and Batman Begins) and smoke bombs, seen in both the 1989 film and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, among many others.

The recent movie The Batman proved that filmmakers still have plenty of gadgets from the comics and Arkham video games left to explore. We saw Batman use a new version of his Webbed Wings, which got us thinking: what other cool tools haven’t made it to the big screen yet? Let’s take a look.

5) Line Launcher

The Grapple Gun is a familiar tool for Batman – it’s a small pistol that shoots a wire with a hook on the end. This allows him to attach to things like pillars and swing or avoid falling. We saw it in action when he rescued Chase Meridian and Robin in the movie Batman Forever.

The Line Launcher, featured in Batman: Arkham Asylum and later games, works a lot like the Grapple Gun, but shoots horizontally. It lets Batman quickly travel between buildings – he can fire it to a rooftop, glide along the line, and observe criminals below. While Batman has often been shown watching over Gotham from above, this is the first time he’s able to swing down a tightrope to intervene. The Batman Returns film included a similar device called the Zip-Line Grapple, but it wasn’t quite the same.

4) Monster Teeth

In the comic Batman: Year 100, Batman used a device called the Monster Teeth. Similar to how he uses darkness and shadow, it was designed to frighten criminals in Gotham City.

The movie The Batman opens by showing criminals nervously looking around dark alleys, clearly afraid of being caught by Batman. This establishes that Robert Pattinson’s version of the character relies on fear to intimidate them – so adding a frightening set of teeth would fit right in.

3) Flash-Bombs

Many films show flashbang grenades being used. The effect is always similar: a bright flash and a ringing sound for anyone watching.

Although Batman has employed Flash-Bombs in comic books, they haven’t appeared in any of his films. He usually prefers smoke bombs, but even those are used infrequently. Given that The Batman strives for realism – and flashbangs are real-world devices – it’s possible we might see him use a Flash-Bomb in a future movie.

2) Cryptographic Sequencer

Batman has often kept tabs on criminals’ communications. A good example is in The Dark Knight, where he uses a system that essentially turns the cell phones of Gotham’s citizens into listening devices, allowing him to monitor the city.

The Cryptographic Sequencer, a device from the Batman: Arkham games, would be a fresh addition to a Batman film. It’s versatile – not only can it be used for surveillance, but also for hacking. Considering Batman doesn’t always have easy access to buildings, a future The Batman movie could feature a villain’s base protected by high-tech security – sealed doors with digital interfaces, and even automated turrets. The Cryptographic Sequencer could then be used to bypass these defenses and disarm the turrets.

1) Blowgun

When Batman first appeared in comics, he surprisingly carried a gun. Though he didn’t often use it, it was still part of his gear, and that was later removed as the character evolved to avoid using firearms. However, his use of a blowgun still makes sense and should be allowed.

The blowgun was introduced by Frank Miller in the comics, and recent Batman films, like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, demonstrate a tendency to draw inspiration from his work. While a somewhat old-fashioned weapon, a blowgun could be a clever way for Batman to infiltrate a building full of criminals and quietly subdue them using sedative-filled darts.

As a huge Batman fan, I’m always thinking about what cool new gadgets he could pull out on screen! I’d love to hear your ideas – what piece of tech would you want to see the Dark Knight use in a movie? Let me know in the comments, and let’s chat about it all over on the ComicBook Forum!
