Live-action adaptations of anime often face challenges. It’s hard to recreate the unique, over-the-top visuals of animation realistically, sometimes resulting in clumsy special effects. Plus, important cultural details from Japan can be lost when the story is changed to appeal to viewers worldwide. A major disappointment for fans is when the live-action versions of their favorite characters don’t resemble how they look and feel in the original anime.

It’s tough to find actors who perfectly match the detailed look of anime characters, and often live-action adaptations of their elaborate costumes end up feeling cheap, like cosplay. As a result, some popular anime characters either don’t translate well to live-action, or simply can’t be accurately portrayed by a real person.

Ai Hoshino’s Eyes Only Work in the Oshi no Ko Anime

Ai Hoshino appears as a cheerful and adorable idol, and her unique character design includes stars in her eyes. However, beneath her bright exterior lies a heartbreaking past. Even though she doesn’t have a lot of screen time in Oshi no Ko, Ai’s influence is felt throughout the story. As the central figure of the anime, she’s won over audiences just like she did her fans within the show.

One of the biggest challenges in making a live-action version of Oshi no Ko would be recreating Ai’s distinctive starry eyes. While special effects like colored contacts could be used, her unique pink and purple eye color might look unnatural or even frightening on a real person. It would also be distracting and undermine her sweet personality to see an actor trying to perform as an idol while visibly struggling with impaired vision.

Tomoe’s long grey hair was represented by a cheap, obviously fake wig, and his pointed ears looked more like something from a costume party. It was clear that no actor could truly capture Tomoe’s otherworldly grace on stage.

Creating a live-action version of High School DxD would be difficult, largely due to its suggestive content. It’s difficult to find an actress who naturally has both a small frame and the curves that the character Rias possesses. Furthermore, few actresses would be comfortable with the level of sexualization Rias experiences. Given the characters are supposed to be high school students, it’s probably best that Rias Gremory remains an animated character.

I’ve always felt Mello, the second choice to inherit L’s work in Death Note, doesn’t get the attention he deserves. But fans definitely appreciate his unique look – that blond bob and edgy style. It’s especially noticeable after the explosion that left him with scars, giving him a tougher appearance. He was crucial in the hunt for Kira, but being seen as the ‘second best’ really seems to follow him, even in the live-action adaptations.

No live-action versions of Death Note have really captured Mello’s character well. He’s often portrayed as either a young child with a poor wig, an unsettlingly puppet-like figure, or is completely left out. It would be incredibly difficult to realistically portray Gojo Satoru in a live-action adaptation. His striking hair and eye color, while iconic in the anime, would likely look unnatural with a real actor. Plus, given the passionate ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ fanbase, any actor cast as Gojo would face intense scrutiny and criticism, with many fans feeling they don’t match the character. For these reasons, it’s probably best to keep Gojo as an animated character.
