The Netflix thriller Bloodline premiered on March 20, 2015, but was cancelled after only a year and a half, meaning its third season would be its final one. Back then, Netflix was still relatively new to creating its own shows, and Bloodline was one of the first ten originals the platform produced, joining hits like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.
The series Bloodline followed the complex Rayburn family – John (Kyle Chandler), Danny (Ben Mendelsohn), Meg (Linda Cardellini), and Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) – and explored the lingering impact of their sister Sarah’s childhood death. The Rayburns were far from close-knit, harboring many dark secrets that unfolded throughout the show. Despite a talented cast, intriguing mysteries, and a distinctive plot, Netflix unexpectedly canceled Bloodline before its third season could finish, a decision many viewers still regret a decade later.
Bloodline Was Completely Underrated

Despite some recognition – Mendelsohn even won an Emmy for his role, and both he and Chandler received multiple nominations – Bloodline never quite got the attention it deserved. Compared to other popular Netflix shows from that time, like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, it didn’t become a huge hit, although many felt it should have.
The strong performances in Bloodline were no surprise, thanks to its talented leads: Mendelsohn, Chandler, and Cardellini. All three actors have enjoyed significant success in their careers. Chandler is well-known for Friday Night Lights, Cardellini has starred in several hit shows, including the new HBO Max series DTF St. Louis, and Mendelsohn played the villain Director Orson Krennic in the Star Wars films Rogue One and Andor.
Beyond the strong performances from the actors, Bloodline was a truly captivating psychological thriller, filled with surprising deaths, suspenseful cliffhangers, and twists that made you question everyone’s motives. It’s a shame the story, especially in its third season, felt rushed and incomplete because the show was unexpectedly canceled, leaving audiences wanting a more fully developed conclusion.
Netflix Axed The Show After 3 Seasons, Despite Planning On More

The TV series Bloodline didn’t last very long. It was announced in October 2014, and the first season appeared on Netflix in March 2015. While a second season arrived on May 27, 2016, it was cancelled just a few months later, on September 14th. A third and final season was released in May 2017. Netflix reportedly cancelled the show because the cost of making it was too high compared to how many people were watching, despite the creators originally planning for five or six seasons.
Perhaps Bloodline struggled because streaming was still in its early days. Back in 2015, streaming services were still figuring things out – very different from how they operate now – and Netflix, as the leading service, might not have been willing to invest in a risky show. It’s intriguing to think how Bloodline would fare if it were made today. Unfortunately, a revival seems highly improbable, despite what fans might hope.
Fans Are Still Mourning The Loss Of This Show

As a huge fan of Bloodline, I’m still really upset about how it ended, even after all these years. It wasn’t just that the show was over, but the way it ended felt so rushed. We found out it was cancelled mid-season three, and you could feel that last season, especially the back half, was crammed together to tie up loose ends. It felt like we didn’t get the ending the show deserved, and it definitely wasn’t the full, satisfying conclusion we were hoping for if it had been allowed to breathe.
Honestly, I was really disappointed when Bloodline got cancelled after only three seasons. Putting aside my issues with how things wrapped up, the show had so much potential! The acting was fantastic, and the Rayburn family – with all their dark secrets – felt like they had years of stories left to tell. It’s a shame, because I don’t think we’ll ever see that messed-up, fascinating family back on screen, and that’s a real loss.
