Marathon’s All-Important Endgame Mode Cryo Archive Is Finally Here

Marathon’s piece de resistance Cryo Archive is finally here.

This new high-level raid is a key part of the latest Bungie shooter, and we needed to experience it before finishing our complete PlayStation 5 review.

This game mode was revealed as the finale of a community-based puzzle event that was designed to end by today, March 20th.

After hours of dedicated effort – analyzing data, tracking down clues, and collaborating on Marathon’s recent alternate reality game – the community has successfully unlocked the first stage of the UESC Marathon.

This new area takes place on the derelict UESC Marathon and is all about fast-paced battles against both players and enemies, completing challenging Vault runs, and making daring escapes. It’s divided into six sections containing cryopods, medical facilities, and storage, and holds seven heavily guarded Vaults filled with valuable loot and special weapons. To enter, players need to be at least Level 25, have unlocked all faction allegiances, and be equipped with gear worth at least 5,000 credits.

Players can also unlock special rewards by completing the Cryo Archive, such as unique styles for each of the six Runner suits, the Vidmaster title, and other goodies.

Players are generally enjoying Marathon, and our review so far is very positive.

But it still remains to be seen whether it’s meeting Sony’s overall expectations.

Although it’s just one piece of the puzzle, the number of players currently playing the game on Steam hasn’t been very high, and sales on consoles haven’t been much better.

We’re still awaiting official sales figures from Bungie, but it will be fascinating to see how much the Cryo Archive impacts the game’s performance.
