Spider-Man: Brand New Day Features 6 Important Mutant Powers

For almost ten years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayed Spider-Man as a relatable hero with a strong support system and enough strength to defeat his enemies. But the new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arriving July 31st, is shaking things up for Peter Parker – particularly his powers – and he isn’t the only character facing big changes.

The first trailer for Brand New Day continues the story immediately after Spider-Man: No Way Home, showing Peter Parker all alone and dedicated to fighting crime. However, his work is interrupted by a strange sickness. The trailer hints that Peter is experiencing a mutation, which will ultimately lead to a significant transformation for him.

The word “mutation” often brings to mind the mutants from Marvel’s X-Men. With the X-Men expected to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the current storyline in the comics, Brand New Day, seems to be highlighting the powers and abilities of one of the team members.

Mutant Powers Confirmed for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Organic Webbing

Similar to other versions of Spider-Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man creates his webs using his mind, not his body. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was even surprised to see Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man shooting webs directly from his body in No Way Home. Now, Peter Parker will need advice from his experienced mentor, as he’s about to face a new challenge.

During the events of Brand New Day, Peter develops the power to shoot webs from his wrists. However, this isn’t a straightforward transformation; he finds himself waking up inside a cocoon he’s created himself.

Telepathy

The first glimpse of Brand New Day shows a tank causing destruction, prompting Spider-Man to stop it. After disabling the tank, he’s shocked to find an elderly woman inside. Before he can process that, the soldiers nearby start behaving oddly, adding to the chaos.

The trailer suggests someone is manipulating people around Peter, making them create problems. While it’s unclear who’s pulling the strings, many believe Sadie Sink’s character—who may be Jean Grey—is the one in control.

Mutant Powers Likely To Appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Telekinesis

If someone has the ability to read minds, it’s likely they can also move objects with their mind. Jean Grey is well-known for using her telekinesis to grab things and throw them at villains. However, it’s unclear how well she currently controls this power, so she might not rely on it automatically.

Super-Strength

Honestly, with everything Peter Parker is dealing with in Brand New Day – the Punisher, the Hand, Scorpion, it’s a lot! – I almost forgot about Hulk being involved too. I’m guessing at some point Bruce Banner is going to lose it and we’ll see the Hulk smash things up, which I’m definitely looking forward to!

Extra Limbs

The ’90s Spider-Man cartoon was great for the character, though it did present some challenges. One story arc transformed Spider-Man into ‘Man-Spider,’ a mutated version with increased strength and resilience… and extra arms! If the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes inspiration from this classic series, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might find himself with a surprising number of hands.

Phoenix Force

The Phoenix Force is usually shown as a powerful, ancient alien being that connects with Jean Grey, boosting her abilities but also controlling her actions. However, sometimes it’s depicted as Jean’s own inner power, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe might explore that idea. Introducing the Phoenix Force so early in Jean’s MCU story would be a big move, but hinting at it fits with Marvel Studios’ usual style.
