Nintendo appears to be updating the upcoming Switch 2 to comply with “right to repair” laws in Europe. The Japanese publication Nikkei reports that Nintendo plans to make the Switch 2’s battery easily replaceable, allowing users to swap it out themselves.
The report suggests Nintendo could expand its repair options to countries like Japan and the US if more laws supporting the right to repair are enacted and more consumers become interested in fixing their own devices.
Nintendo is not only simplifying repairs for the Switch console itself, but also for its Joy-Con 2 controllers. It’s unclear if the same will happen for the Switch 2 Pro Controller in Europe.
Although Nikkei hasn’t directly confirmed it, reports suggest the original Nintendo Switch may be discontinued in Europe. This is likely because the older model doesn’t meet the requirements of new EU repair laws. Nintendo probably won’t bother updating the 2017 console, as they’re already focused on selling the newer version.
Although Nintendo hasn’t officially announced when the new, easily repairable Switch 2 will be released, a recent report suggests it’s coming soon. This is likely to help Nintendo avoid potential legal issues in European courts.
This report follows Nintendo’s recent announcement that they’ve sold over 17 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of 2025. They also shared that 7.01 million units were sold during the first holiday season. Game sales reached 17.31 million units.
Nintendo announced that the original Switch has now sold over 155 million units, making it the company’s best-selling console ever. This surpasses the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units.
According to a new report from Niko Partners, the next Nintendo Switch (often called the Switch 2) could become more expensive in 2026. The research firm points out that the Switch 2 currently has an edge over PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S because it’s more affordable. However, with Sony and Microsoft potentially raising prices on their consoles, Nintendo might do the same.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently discussed challenges in the hardware market, largely due to ongoing shortages of computer memory. He explained that making a profit on the next Switch console will be complex, as it relies on things like currency exchange rates, import taxes, and the availability of parts. He stated that Nintendo is working to secure a stable supply of components for the future to address these issues.
