When Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2022, few expected it to become a worldwide hit. While critics loved it from the start, its distributor, A24, meant it didn’t immediately grab mainstream attention like a blockbuster such as Oppenheimer. Despite this, the film’s complex, reality-bending story resonated with audiences and ultimately earned more major Academy Awards than any other film in history. Now, the directors behind that success are returning with another potentially groundbreaking project.
The film Everything Everywhere All at Once won seven Academy Awards, including six prestigious honors – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and acting awards for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis – thanks to its unique mix of genres and heartfelt story. Now, Ke Huy Quan has hinted to Collider about their next collaboration. While details are still under wraps, initial reports suggest it will be just as creatively bold and expansive as EEAAO. He has confirmed:
We’re aiming for a really fun sci-fi action comedy that’s also emotionally resonant and explores big questions about life. That’s what we always strive for in our films. And, given how complicated things are in the world today, I think it’s important for storytellers to reflect that reality in their work.
The Daniels—the filmmaking duo—first gained recognition with their 2016 film, Swiss Army Man. It took six years for their next movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO), to come out. Now, fans face another long wait for their next project, and Kwan has explained it might not be released until late 2027.
We plan to start filming this summer, with the movie expected to be released in November 2027, assuming everything stays on schedule. Our main goal is to stay connected to what’s happening in the world, understand it deeply, and create something enjoyable and engaging that reflects those current events. The reason this project is taking longer than usual is because the issues and feelings we’re observing are complicated and full of contradictions. It takes time to make sense of all of this and weave it into a cohesive and meaningful film.

To highlight the immersive experience the new movie aims to deliver, Kwan shared that several scenes were filmed exclusively for IMAX. He playfully compared different film formats to enjoying a good wine – you can enjoy it simply, or elevate the experience with a proper glass. In his analogy, a standard movie theater is like drinking from a paper cup, while IMAX is like savoring the wine from a fine glass. The director elaborated:
We’re filming most of this movie using a large format specifically for IMAX screens. We want to create a truly immersive, large-scale experience – a big event – for audiences, especially given that it’s a large action film, and we’re very enthusiastic about that approach.
After the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was only their second feature film together, there’s a lot of anticipation for the directors’ next project. The first film achieved several historic wins at the Oscars – including being the first film to have three actors win Oscars while also winning Best Picture, the first win for an Asian woman as Best Actress, and the first Oscar win for an actor born in Vietnam. Because of all this, even before filming begins, their next movie is already being talked about as a potential awards winner.
