The 1980s and 1990s were the peak of the erotic thriller genre, with films like Cruising, Dressed to Kill, and Body Heat leading the way, and Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct making it hugely popular. While those were the classic years, some memorable erotic thrillers have also been made in the 2000s and beyond. These movies generally involve characters having dangerous and forbidden sexual encounters.
Some people believe the internet has contributed to the decline of this film genre in recent years. The idea is that with so much adult content available online, audiences aren’t as interested in movies that rely on shocking visuals and nudity. However, the films listed below are still worth watching, as they also feature interesting stories.
‘Unfaithful’ (2002)

20th Century Fox
We’ve all seen it in movies: two people bump into each other, make eye contact, and you just know it’s the start of a love story. But in the movie Unfaithful, the situation is complicated. Connie is married and enjoying a comfortable life, but she meets a fascinating, though much less affluent, man. Despite their different worlds, they quickly become involved in an affair. The question is, how long can she keep it a secret from her husband?
As a critic, I was completely captivated by this film. It’s a truly immersive experience – visually stunning and emotionally resonant. Director Adrian Lyne made a brilliant choice focusing on close-ups; it keeps you locked in with the characters and their feelings, rather than getting lost in the scenery. The entire cast delivers phenomenal performances, but Richard Gere is especially unforgettable as Connie’s husband. While it’s based on the French film La Femme Infidèle, I’d recommend this version if you prefer a more contemporary cinematic style.
‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ (2022)

Netflix
Netflix’s adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s famous novel, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, is arguably the most exciting version of the story to date. The plot centers around Sir Clifford Chatterley, a nobleman who returns home paralyzed after World War I. His wife, Lady Chatterley, finds herself increasingly attracted to the estate’s gamekeeper.
As someone who loves a good romance, I was completely captivated by the intense and secret connection between Lady Chatterley and her lover. The film beautifully portrays how she gets lost in the moment, abandoning all reservations. Their relationship feels incredibly youthful and free – there’s a scene of them running through the rain, completely uninhibited, and the scenery is breathtaking. Beyond the passion, the movie really makes you consider what you’re willing to risk for love and what truly defines loyalty. Honestly, who you end up sympathizing with probably says a lot about your own experiences with relationships.
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ (2015)
E.L. James’ hugely popular 2011 novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, was quickly adapted into a film after a competitive bidding process. The story follows Anastasia “Ana” Steele, a college graduate whose life is turned upside down when she begins a relationship with the wealthy and powerful Christian Grey. The film, like the book, centers on their intense and often challenging sexual relationship, which explores themes of dominance and submission – a common trope in erotic fiction.
I really enjoyed watching Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan together – they were fantastic! The supporting actors, like Jennifer Ehle and Marcia Gay Harden, were excellent too. I thought it was a surprisingly engaging story that made me think about what love actually means. As for how it compares to the book? Honestly, it follows the story pretty closely, so if you loved the book, you’ll probably love the movie. And if you haven’t read the book, don’t worry – the film covers everything you need to know!
‘Babygirl’ (2024)

A24
When Nicole Kidman was announced for the 2024 erotic thriller Babygirl, fans were thrilled, knowing her history with the genre. She defined ’90s sexiness in films like To Die For and Eyes Wide Shut. In this new movie, she plays Romy Mathis, a powerful CEO of a New York robotics company, who begins an affair with an intern. The relationship involves a power dynamic where one person takes control. The question is, how will Romy’s husband, Jacob (played by Antonio Banderas), react when he discovers the truth?
This visually calming thriller explores the often-hidden world of office relationships, blending the lines between professional and personal lives. It’s a moving story, particularly thanks to Antonio Banderas’ heartfelt portrayal of a husband who’s been betrayed. Nicole Kidman also shines, delivering a captivating performance that earned her a prestigious acting award. The entire cast contributes strong performances, making for a compelling watch.
‘365 Days’ (2020)

Next Film
Okay, so 365 Days is one of those movies that’s just…terribly good. The story is pretty ridiculous – a guy from the Sicilian mafia basically kidnaps a woman and tries to make her fall for him – but honestly, it’s become iconic. I mean, how could anyone forget that scene on the boat after she almost drowned? It’s so over-the-top, it’s unforgettable, and that’s part of why I secretly love it.
Barbara Białowąs and Tomasz Mandes’ film powerfully depicts the difficult experience of dating a criminal with narcissistic tendencies. The film also features impressive camerawork and a realistic, unhurried style that brings Blanka Lipińska’s popular novels to life. It’s a film you can simply relax and enjoy.
‘The Duke of Burgundy’ (2014)

Artificial Eye
Despite feeling like a historical drama, The Duke of Burgundy is a modern LGBTQ+ film. It’s set on a beautiful, fantastical estate in Europe and centers on Evelyn and Cynthia, two scientists who study moths and butterflies. However, we quickly discover their relationship is built on carefully planned sadomasochistic roleplay, with Cynthia taking control and Evelyn playing the submissive. But the power dynamic isn’t working for everyone.
Even today, The Duke of Burgundy remains a captivating and intense film exploring themes of desire, love, and changing allegiances. Sidse Babett Knudsen gives a brilliant performance as a courageous woman who openly embraces her passions, supported by a strong ensemble cast. The film’s title references the Duke of Burgundy butterfly (Hamearis lucina), but the reason behind this connection remains a mystery. It’s a compelling watch that also offers insightful observations about the patterns of abusive relationships.
‘Deep Water’ (2022)
Adrian Lyne is well-known for directing steamy thrillers like Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. While his most famous films came before 2000, he returned to the genre in the 2020s with Deep Water. The film centers on a married couple who try to save their relationship with an open arrangement, but things take a dark turn when the husband begins to murder his wife’s partners.
Despite some script issues, Deep Water is saved by the excellent performances of Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck. The film explores timeless themes of determination and spite. Visually stunning, it’s remarkable considering the director hadn’t made a movie in two decades. The score by Marco Beltrami is also a perfect fit, effectively portraying the unsettling consequences of obsession.
‘Chloe’ (2009)

Sony Pictures
Catherine is worried about her struggling marriage and suspects her husband, David, might be having an affair with one of his students. To find out, she devises a plan to test his loyalty by sending him a tempting offer. If he fails, she’ll use it as grounds for revenge or divorce. The story Chloe explores whether this risky plan will succeed.
The film Chloe is a steamy and somewhat strange erotic thriller that feels like it could have come straight from the 1980s or 90s. It explores themes of insecurity, asking why people struggle with self-doubt. Liam Neeson gives a strong performance, though production was sadly cut short when his wife, Natasha Richardson, died in a skiing accident.
‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ (2013)
While Léa Seydoux played a more reserved character in the James Bond films with Daniel Craig, she fully embraced a passionate role in Blue is the Warmest Color. The French film features Seydoux as a talented artist who develops a deep and intense love affair with a naive young woman. It’s a story of pure connection and genuine emotion, not secret encounters.
This beautifully shot and simply told love story transcends typical romance plots, achieving a rare and poetic quality. It’s a film you’ll immediately want to re-experience, and Léa Seydoux’s captivating presence perfectly conveys both the innocence of first love and the complexities of genuine connection. Plus, it’s worth knowing that Blue Is the Warmest Color received the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival.
‘The Handmaiden’ (2016)

CJ Entertainment
Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden draws inspiration from Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, but reimagines the story in Japanese-occupied Korea. The film is a captivating blend of deception, thrilling suspense, and exploration of sexual freedom. It follows a woman who is employed as a maid to an heiress with the intention of stealing her fortune, but their relationship unexpectedly blossoms into love.
Park Chan-wook’s masterpiece, The Handmaiden, is a captivating story of a young maid’s journey of self-discovery, exploring themes of love and morality with a relaxed yet engaging pace. The film’s beautiful setting provides stunning visuals, and its narrative cleverly challenges traditional power structures. While it deserved to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, its impact is undeniable, and this recognition is a testament to its enduring quality.
