What Nicholas Brendon Said About Cauda Equina Syndrome Before Death

Nicholas Brendon never shied away from sharing his health struggles.

Before passing away on March 20th from natural causes, Nicholas’s family had been sharing updates with fans about the 54-year-old’s health. He was known for playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

He was particularly vulnerable after being hospitalized in August 2022 following a heart problem. Doctors discovered he had tachycardia, a birth defect that causes an unusually rapid heartbeat.

Nicky asked his sister to share an update with his fans, explaining his recent absence from live streams. According to a now-deleted Instagram post reported by The Los Angeles Times, Nicky experienced a cardiac incident – specifically, a fast or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia/arrhythmia) – about two weeks ago that required a trip to the emergency room. He is now doing well.

She also shared that Nicholas previously experienced a health issue in 2021 following a second surgery for his cauda equina syndrome (CES). CES is a rare and serious condition where nerves in the lower spine are squeezed or don’t work right, as explained by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

I’ve heard he’s really been focusing on getting some much-needed rest and has been going to a lot of doctor’s appointments lately. It sounds like he’s prioritizing his health, which is great to hear.

Nicholas suffered a severe spinal injury after a fall in February 2021, requiring emergency surgery to avoid paralysis, according to his manager, Theresa Fortier, in a statement to the L.A. Times. During a follow-up spinal surgery in October 2021, his spinal cord was accidentally punctured, which led to a rapid heart rate, she reported.

Even though he was going through a difficult time, the Criminal Minds actor focused on staying positive and shared pictures of his paintings on Instagram.

He explained his long absence on Instagram in 2023, sharing a photo of his artwork and writing that he’d been dealing with significant health issues. He’d undergone two spinal surgeries and had a heart attack, leading to many doctor’s visits.

Nicholas found navigating health insurance and getting approvals incredibly stressful, saying it felt almost as difficult as coping with his injuries themselves.

He added, “I also needed time to rest…or at least as much as I’m capable of resting.”

Nicholas’ family told The Hollywood Reporter on March 20th that he had passed away peacefully in his sleep. They remembered him as someone who was passionate about entertainment and art.

According to a statement released, he was a deeply passionate and sensitive person with an unwavering dedication to his work. Those closest to him knew that his art genuinely expressed his true self.
