Lisan al-Gaib! revisits the expansive science fiction world created by Frank Herbert, following Paul Atreides as he governs as the new Emperor. Though the sequel to Dune: Part Two arrives relatively quickly—just three years later—the story jumps forward in time significantly, meaning viewers will need to reacquaint themselves with the characters and events from the previous film.
Following the events of the first two films, Dune: Part Three jumps forward seventeen years. The characters have all grown and changed, taking on new responsibilities as the story reaches its conclusion. With the final Dune movie arriving soon, it’s helpful for viewers to remember who the characters are now and what their current situations are.
Farok Is an Aged Warrior With a Bone to Pick
Isaach de Bankolé will play Farok, a new character in Dune: Part Three. Farok is a skilled Fedaykin warrior who saw Paul Atreides become a powerful figure on Arrakis and eventually become Emperor. Though he appeared briefly in the first two Dune films, Farok becomes a key part of the story in Part Three, where he’s around 50 years old.
Farok was a young man, likely in his thirties, when Paul Atreides rose to power. He was still able to fight and joined Paul in numerous conflicts, including the galactic war, losing his arm in battle as a result of his dedication. Now, many years later, Farok is starting to question whether Paul’s wars truly benefited the Fremen people, or if they’ve strayed from their original path while following the Lisan al-Gaib.
Stilgar Is Still a True Believer in His Lisan al-Gaib
Javier Bardem is back as Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen community seen in the first two Dune films. His strong belief in Paul Atreides was key to Paul becoming a revered figure. In Dune: Part Three, we’ll see Stilgar as an older man, around 65 years old.
For seventeen years after the events of Dune: Part Two, Stilgar has been a loyal servant to his emperor—perhaps too loyal. He followed every command without question, even those that led to widespread killings. Now, older and wiser, Stilgar is finally reflecting on his actions and questioning whether he served the best interests of his people or simply obeyed one man.
Hayt Is a Specter of the Deceased Duncan Idaho
Many viewers were likely surprised to see Jason Momoa back in the Dune universe, considering his character, Duncan Idaho, died in the first film. Now, he plays Hayt, a character created from Duncan Idaho’s genetic material. While Hayt appears as a man in his forties, he’s essentially a newborn, as he was grown in special tanks by the Tleilaxu and hasn’t experienced life chronologically.
The Dune novels by Frank Herbert feature several “ghola,” which are essentially clones with the genetic makeup of Duncan Idaho. The character Hayt, seen in the trailer, is one of these gholas, specifically created by a Mentat to assassinate Paul Atreides. He’s designed to be a nearly emotionless weapon, focused solely on this mission. However, there are hints that remnants of the original Duncan Idaho’s personality might still exist within him.
Scytale’s True Age Isn’t as It Appears
Paul Atreides now faces a new enemy in Part Three: Scytale, played by the actor known for his role as Batman. Scytale is a Tleilaxu Face Dancer who appears after Paul’s galactic Jihad, seeking revenge against the Empire. While he looks to be around 35 years old, determining his actual age is challenging.
Scytale doesn’t appear as old as he actually is. His youthful look is a deception created by the Tleilaxu technique called face-dancing, a way of presenting a false appearance. He’s actually centuries old, and has maintained his consciousness by transferring it into new, cloned bodies called ghola. This makes him one of the oldest beings in the universe.
Irulan Is the Empress-Consort in a Collapsing Empire
Florence Pugh will have a much larger role in the next Dune movie as Irulan. The film picks up seventeen years after the events of the first, showing Irulan as a more mature and insightful 39-year-old – a significant change from the 22-year-old she was previously, and now the Empress-Consort of Paul Atreides after his rise to power.
Irulan finds herself in a difficult position in the new Dune film. She witnessed her father lose power and go into exile, and then was compelled to marry the man who defeated him. For the past seventeen years, she’s been stuck in an unhappy marriage, essentially handling the political duties her husband dislikes. Now, as the empire crumbles, she’s burdened with the immense responsibility of keeping it functioning.
Gurney Halleck’s Fighting Days Are at an End
For decades, Gurney Halleck has been a deeply loyal member of the Atreides family, and that dedication continues. Josh Brolin returns as Gurney, building on his previous performances in the Dune films. This time, he portrays an older, more seasoned statesman, a man in his late 60s or early 70s.
Gurney Halleck used to be a formidable warrior for the Atreides, but by the time of Dune: Part Three, he’s retired from fighting. Now, he acts as a key military advisor in the Atreides court, using his knowledge and experience to support the Emperor’s ongoing campaigns. As he nears the end of his life, Gurney reflects on the decades he’s lived through, including witnessing a young boy become an emperor.
Lady Jessica Is a Reverend Mother With Slow Aging
Although nearly two decades pass between Dune: Part Two and Dune: Part Three, Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica doesn’t seem to have aged much. In the upcoming film, her character is around 55 years old, but the special atmosphere on the desert planet Arrakis, filled with the Spice, slows down aging, making her look younger than her years.
Since the events of Dune: Part Two, she’s seen her son transform from a young, unproven leader into a powerful conqueror whose name strikes fear across the galaxy. Now, she faces the daunting prospect of watching everything she’s worked so hard to achieve crumble under the pressure of new and dangerous enemies.
Alia Atreides Has Officially Been Unleashed on the Empire
Anya Taylor-Joy will be a main character in Dune: Part Three, continuing her role from a brief appearance in the last movie. She’s playing Alia Atreides, Paul’s younger sister, who he foresaw before she was born. Because Alia was born right after the events of Dune: Part Two, she’ll be around 17 years old in the new film.
Before she was even born, the Fremen people called Alia Atreides “the Abomination” because she possessed the unusual ability to be fully aware and conscious while still in her mother’s womb. Now, as a young adult, Alia’s powers have grown significantly, allowing her to, among other things, appear as a woman in her twenties.
Chani Isn’t the Same Person She Once Was
The first two movies showed Chani as a teenager who fell in love with Paul Atreides and assisted him in taking control of Arrakis. Now, seventeen years later, she’s 35 and has experienced far too much violence and war for someone her age.
At the end of Dune: Part Two, Paul and Chani had a falling out. Since then, Chani has been leading a Fremen rebellion against the Empire, refusing to support Paul’s rule. When audiences see Chani again in Dune: Part Three, she’s changed – she’s become tougher and more experienced from fighting.
Paul Atreides Is the Lisan al-Gaib
Timothée Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, will undergo a significant transformation between Dune: Part Two and Part Three. While he was just fifteen at the start of the story, Paul was only eighteen when he defeated the Emperor and took control of the galaxy for House Atreides. By Dune: Part Three, Paul is 35 years old and has been ruling for almost twenty years.
After seventeen years as ruler, Paul remains in power thanks to a devoted and fanatical following. He stays looking remarkably young – appearing to be in his late twenties – thanks to a diet rich in Spice. Though he’s still youthful in appearance, his face now bears the scars of many battles, and he keeps his head shaved.
