Chappel Roan Responds to Claim She Left Jude Law’s Daughter “in Tears”

Chappel Roan knows a recent fan encounter was neither fine nor cool.

Soccer player Jorginho said his stepdaughter, Ada—whose mother, Catherine Harding, shares her with actor Jude Law—had a troubling experience with singer Rita Ora and someone from her security team. Ora then responded with her side of what happened.

Responding to Jorginho’s statement that a security guard was “aggressive” towards his wife and daughter, Chappel clarified that the guard wasn’t hired by her directly.

In a video shared on Instagram on March 22nd, 28-year-old Chappel stated he didn’t see a woman or a child, and no one approached him. He was simply having breakfast in his hotel, and believes the people he’s referring to were also guests at the same hotel.

Honestly, everyone’s making it sound like I had something to do with security bothering that mom and her kid, but that’s just not true! I swear, I didn’t even ask anyone to go talk to them. They didn’t approach me at all, and they weren’t causing any trouble, they were just…there. It’s so frustrating that people are twisting things!

The Grammy-winning artist, who has previously faced criticism for establishing personal boundaries with fans and the media, also strongly disapproved of the security guard’s behavior.

She argued that it’s wrong for security to automatically distrust people without a valid reason, especially when those people haven’t done anything wrong. She also clarified that she has no ill will towards her fans or children, calling the idea that she does ‘crazy’.

I’m truly sorry if anyone made assumptions about what you would do and caused discomfort to you and your child,” Chappel (born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) said. “It makes me very sad that you had to experience that, and you didn’t deserve it.”

I was really shocked to hear about what happened to Jorginho’s family. Apparently, just a day ago, he shared that his wife and daughter were treated poorly by a security guard at the hotel they were staying at in São Paulo. They were having breakfast at the same hotel as Ada, who was in town to see Chappel perform at Lollapalooza on March 21st. Jorginho didn’t mention Ada by name, but it was clearly about that situation. It’s just awful to think about them being mistreated while trying to enjoy their trip.

He shared on Instagram on March 21st that his family happened to be staying at the same hotel as a certain artist. During breakfast, the artist walked by their table, and his daughter, being a child, instantly recognized her and got very excited, wanting to confirm it was really her.

He went on to explain that the most disappointing thing was she hadn’t even gone over to speak to her. She just walked by, glanced to make sure it was really her, smiled, and then returned to her mother’s side. She didn’t say a word or ask for an autograph.

Jorginho claims that after his daughter passed by, a security guard confronted them, accusing his daughter of “disrespecting” or “harassing” other guests and telling Catherine she should have stopped her.

The athlete expressed disbelief that simply checking if someone was at a table could be considered harassment. They also claimed the security guard threatened to complain to the hotel, even while the athlete’s daughter was visibly upset and crying.

He said his daughter was very upset and cried quite a bit about what happened, and he even gave Chappel some tips on how to handle enthusiastic fans in the future.

He expressed disappointment with how fans were being treated, especially considering how vital they are. He believes fans are ultimately responsible for creating everything we enjoy.

Though it might seem sudden, Chappell Roan has actually been creating music for years, starting as a teenager in Missouri. She began by posting covers and her own songs on YouTube. During her senior year of high school, she was signed to Atlantic Records, but the excitement didn’t quite feel real while still attending Willard High.

In a November 2023 interview with Amazon Music, Kayleigh Amstutz shared that the announcement of her signing to Atlantic Records was made over the school’s public address system – and included the news that pizza would be served for lunch. She recalled them saying something like, ‘Congratulations to Kayleigh Amstutz for signing to Atlantic Records, and also for lunch…it’s pizza!’

Your favorite artist’s favorite artist turned to her family when coming up with her alter ego.

Kayleigh Rose Amstutz was born on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, but she has since adopted a stage name. She’s said she never felt a strong connection to her birth name and was inspired by the music her grandfather loved when choosing it.

She explained to Cherwell in August 2022 that she adopted the name Chappell as a tribute to her grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell. She had promised him she would use the name before he passed away from brain cancer in 2016. Her first name, Roan, came from his favorite song, “Strawberry Roan,” a classic Western tune about a reddish-pink horse, making it a deeply meaningful choice.

Growing up, Chappell attended church multiple times a week, a ritual that made her feel trapped.

She explained to Variety in September 2023 that she struggled with conflicting desires. “I really wanted to be seen as a good person, but I also felt this intense need to break free,” she said. “I would sneak out often, even though I still went to church three times a week. It was like I was trying to be ‘good,’ but also desperately wanting to rebel.”

The singer says she’s no longer actively involved with the church, but she still appreciates the values it taught her.

She told Vanity Fair in September 2023 that she’s no longer affiliated with the Christian Church, but she still feels connected to the community and understands their point of view. She explained that her experience gives her a unique perspective on complex issues, allowing her to understand things that often leave others confused.

This midwestern princess was almost a Mid-WED-stern princess.

In a TikTok video from July 2023, she shared that she’d come close to getting married twice, but didn’t offer any further details.

Although we don’t know much about her previous relationships, the singer of “Hot to Go” is known for publicly calling out her exes. Before performing her song “My Kink is Karma” at the 2024 Bonnaroo festival, she sent a pointed message to a former partner.

She announced the song was for her former partner, then added, “It’s strange to see you turn into the person you always criticized, while I’ve become the person I always aimed to be.”

And at a later performance she spoke directly to her ex’s new fiancé.

She explained that the song was about her ex, who had been telling people at a bar back home that they used to date. She then directed a message to the ex’s fiancé, telling them they should end the relationship.

I was so excited for Chappell’s first album! It was originally going to be called Femininomenon, after one of her songs, but she realized people would probably struggle to say it. She ended up naming it The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess instead, which I love because it really highlights where she’s from and her connection to the Midwest.

She told Variety that showcasing the Midwest was essential to her project because it deeply impacts everything she does – her music, style, songwriting, and overall vibe. She feels it’s crucial to represent that part of her identity, something she once thought she’d lost but now embraces.

The new album title more accurately reflects the story of the artist moving from her hometown in Missouri to chase her musical dreams in Los Angeles.

After being signed to Atlantic Records for five years, Chappell was dropped by the label in 2020.

She explained that her team worried her single, “Pink Pony Club,” created with producer Dan Nigro, wouldn’t be successful during the pandemic and didn’t fit the darker, more gothic style of her music then.

She explained on the show Q with Tom Power that her record label dropped her, like many other artists, because of financial difficulties in 2020. With touring – a major source of income for musicians – shut down, the industry suffered. She noted that her album ‘Pink Pony’ was released in April 2020, a particularly bad time for a dance-focused song, and admitted the label was reluctant to release it in the first place.

When her record label, Atlantic, ended their contract, Chappell returned to her hometown in Missouri to live with her parents and took a job at a drive-through restaurant. She has said this period led her to really wonder if she should continue pursuing a career in music.

As she recalled, “I was just kind of like, ‘I wonder if this is really for me.’”

Despite the challenges, she refused to abandon her passion for music and kept working on her unique style on her own.

Looking back, she told Rolling Stone in 2022 that even though her time with a record label was difficult for five years, it ultimately proved to be a huge benefit. She also learned through being independent that she’s capable of handling things on her own.

Chappell isn’t Dan’s only pop princess.

I remember exactly how I first discovered Olivia Rodrigo – it was back in 2020! I was scrolling through Instagram and came across a video of her singing “Happier,” a song nobody had heard yet. I was instantly hooked! Then, not long after, Dan and Olivia worked together on “Driver’s License,” and that’s when everyone really started to notice her incredible talent. It was amazing to watch her blow up!

Dan and Olivia were hitting it off, but Chappell was back in Missouri focusing on her music. When she came back to Los Angeles and started collaborating with Dan again, she met Olivia, and the two of them quickly became very close.

Chappell performed as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Tour in San Francisco in May 2022, and again during the initial leg of her GUTS world tour in 2024.

During a November 2023 interview with Triple J radio, she described her rapid rise to fame as ‘intense and fast,’ explaining that she went from playing a show for 200 people in May of the previous year to performing for 20,000 people in less than two years. She also mentioned opening for the artist in San Francisco the previous May, an experience she enjoyed despite the smaller crowd of 9,000, noting the audience had a particularly energetic vibe due to being generally younger than her usual fans.

Chappell has not only performed as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo on two occasions, but she’s also contributed backing vocals to several of Rodrigo’s songs.

During an interview with Capital Buzz about her first album, she shared that she sang backup vocals on several tracks, including “Obsessed,” “Lacy,” and “Bad Idea, Right?” She also recorded vocals for the song “Can’t Catch Me Now,” which Olivia Rodrigo created for the 2023 movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she explained that she and her stylist, Genesis Webb, find inspiration for her dramatic looks in a variety of places – including drag, horror films, burlesque, and theater. She enjoys playing with contrasts, like appearing both beautiful and frightening, pretty and over-the-top, or even deliberately unpolished.

No matter what daring or unusual outfit she chooses – whether it’s a see-through latex skirt, a fake pig nose, or sparkly butterfly wings – she always manages to create a stunning impression.

The singer remembered the exact moment she understood that Chappell Roan wasn’t just a name she used on stage – it was also the identity she took on as a drag performer.

I had a drag queen named Crayola open for my show in London, and she pointed out that I wasn’t just wearing makeup – I was performing drag. It was a really impactful moment for me. I’ve since embraced that identity, and it’s been incredibly liberating to think of Chappell Roan as my drag persona. It’s also helped me create a healthy separation between my work and personal life.

While on The Tonight Show, comedian Hannah Chappell revealed that her joke – “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist” – was inspired by Sasha Colby, the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15.

She explained that the line was a nod to Sasha Colby, who famously says, ‘I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen.’ It really resonated with her, and she hoped Sasha Colby would see her performance someday, which is why she included the reference.

One month after that, the popular drag performer appeared on stage with Chappell during her set at the 2024 Capitol Hill Block Party.

After being diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder in 2022, Chappell revealed that her increasing popularity motivated her to get support.

She told Rolling Stone in September 2024 that she had a really unhappy childhood. She described herself as shy, awkward, and overly concerned with what others thought. She added that her parents did everything they could to support her.

She eventually said she came to a turning point. She realized she couldn’t continue living with such intense sadness or feeling so hopeless that she considered ending her life. She finally managed to get her life back on track.

Since learning about her condition, Chappell has openly shared her experiences with mental health, hoping to reduce the shame and misunderstanding surrounding it.

She shared on Instagram that this issue impacts her every day and significantly influences her music. She emphasized that she’s doing well and believes it’s important to openly discuss mental health.

This Midwestern princess won’t be dating another singer anytime in the future.

In a September 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, the singer of “School Nights” plainly stated she doesn’t want to date other musicians, saying they are “crazy.”

In March 2025, Chappell shared that she had been dating someone for six months and was really enjoying the relationship.

“It’s serious,” she said on the Call Her Daddypodcast. “I’m very in love.”

She added, “I’m dating the same person that I was dating before [my career] blew up.”

Chappell publicly shared that she is a lesbian during a performance in Ohio in early 2024, after previously dating men.

She told Rolling Stone that her beliefs prohibited her from having relationships with men. As a result, she now feels uncomfortable even thinking about kissing a man, believing no one could compare to her experiences with women.

Despite her progress, she admitted she still occasionally struggles with her sexuality. “I can’t understand why it bothers me sometimes,” she explained. “It shouldn’t, but I’m realizing I need to accept how I feel.”

Even though she still sometimes struggles with it, Chappell is comfortable with being queer, but she doesn’t feel like she needs to constantly discuss it.

Chappell revealed during her June performance at the 2024 Governor’s Ball that she declined an invitation from President Joe Biden to perform at the White House for Pride Month.

She explained that her decision hinged on ensuring everyone had liberty, justice, and freedom. She stated, ‘Once those things are in place, I’ll be there.’

During the performance, she also demanded equal rights for marginalized communities.

Wearing a Statue of Liberty costume, she powerfully stated, “I represent the ultimate queen, but let’s not forget the message engraved in my very being: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ For me, that means fighting for the freedom of transgender people, the rights of all women, and especially for those who are oppressed and living in occupied lands.”

Before performing at the 2024 VMAs, where she took inspiration from Joan of Arc, Chappell had a heated exchange with a photographer on the red carpet. The photographer reportedly told someone to “Shut the fk up,” and Chappell angrily responded, shouting “YOU shut the fk up. Don’t! Not me, bh.”

Her reasoning for standing up for herself is quite simple.

She told Newsweek she’s really put off by all the attention and fame surrounding the situation. While some women who’ve been dealing with this for a long time are used to it, she isn’t. She refuses to be polite or accommodating to anyone who tries to silence her.

Chappell demonstrated a remarkable memory when she approached a photographer at the premiere of Netflix’s Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour to address a past unpleasant experience with them.

She confronted a photographer, saying, “You were really disrespectful to me at the Grammys and yelled at me at the after-party. I haven’t forgotten it, and I think I deserve an apology for how rude you were. I need you to apologize.”

The Grammy-winning artist, famous for her popular pop songs, is trying something new with her country track, “The Giver.”

Chappell explained on Apple Music’s Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen in March 2025 that he wrote a country song simply because he thought it would be amusing. He described the song as ‘campy and fun.’

Although the song was fun to create, Chappell also shared that it represents a return to the kind of music she originally made.

She explained she was from southwest Missouri and grew up listening to Christian music and country. Then, she discovered Lady Gaga’s song ‘Alejandro,’ which she really enjoyed, and she’s continued to love country music ever since.

The singer of “Red Wine Supernova,” known for being honest about the challenges of fame, believes her career would be even more successful if she didn’t share her opinions so openly.

In January 2025, Chappell told the BBC that he believes he’d achieve greater success if he could suppress his natural reactions. He explained that overriding his instincts – the internal signals telling him to stop or that something isn’t right – would allow him to reach a wider audience.
