Caterina Scorsone and E.R. Fightmaster are continuing their Grey’s Anatomy love story offscreen.
The actors, who played a couple on Shonda Rhimes’ TV show for a short time, confirmed they were dating in real life on March 23rd in Los Angeles.
While out and about, Caterina Scorsone, known for her role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy since season seven, wore a green T-shirt with the word “Oui” printed on the front in white. She completed the look with a matching baseball cap, jeans, and white sneakers.
E.R. wore brown pants, a white button-down shirt, and black Adidas sneakers. The 33-year-old actor, who played Dr. Kai Bartley in seasons 18 and 19 of the show, completed the outfit with sunglasses and a brown baseball cap.
Caterina, who has three children – Eliza (13), Pippa (9), and Lucky (6) – with her ex-partner Rob Giles, has recently confirmed her relationship with E.R. by being seen holding hands after lunch. The pair have been close since briefly working together on a project in 2022.
The pair have been seen together on and off over the years, like at an Angel City FC game in 2023 and, just recently, at Elton John’s Oscars after-party this month.
Amelia and Kai briefly dated during season 19 of the show, but their relationship ended badly.
Kai, a character on E.R., departed the show to pursue a job in London. Before leaving, he unexpectedly broke up with Amelia, who was already juggling a long-distance relationship with him and coparenting their son, Scout, with her ex, Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack).

Before we left, Kai explained to Amelia that ever since he’d told her about the job in London—a huge opportunity for his career—she’d turned the conversation back to herself. He’d been working with Dr. Meredith Grey’s team researching a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Kai continues, “I love you, but—”

To which Amelia interrupts them, saying, “‘But.’ That’s what people say before they abandon you.”
Although Amelia and Kai didn’t last, Caterina and E.R. seem to be finding lasting happiness. Read on for more memorable couples from Grey’s Anatomy…

It all began with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd, affectionately known as ‘McDreamy’ (Patrick Dempsey). From the very first episode, viewers were hooked by their unexpected connection – a one-night stand that turned out to be with a fellow doctor at the hospital where Meredith was starting her internship. Over eleven seasons, we followed their relationship as they navigated challenges like Derek’s existing marriage, Meredith’s suicidal thoughts, and numerous life-or-death situations, eventually leading to a simple Post-It note wedding. Tragically, Patrick Dempsey chose to leave the show, and Shonda Rhimes decided the only respectful way to conclude their story was to have Derek die in a car accident, though their love remained.

She is the sun, after all.

Japril, the relationship between April and Jackson, began amidst chaos – famously, April left her fiancé at the altar to be with Jackson. Their happiness was short-lived, as they discovered their unborn child, Samuel, had a condition that wouldn’t allow him to survive, and April delivered a stillborn son. They divorced, but later had a daughter, Harriet, after a brief reconnection. When April left the show, she had found happiness again with Matthew, her former fiancé, and they impulsively married with Jackson’s support.
Fans who loved the couple Japril had a glimmer of hope when April returned to Grey’s Anatomy in season 17 to support Jackson’s storyline. After Jackson moved to Boston to run a foundation dedicated to racial justice, April, who was recently divorced, decided to move to the East Coast with their daughter, Harriet. This left fans wondering if a future reunion for April and Jackson might be possible.
In the season 18 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, the writers officially brought April and Jackson back together as a couple by having their characters share a kiss.

Oh my god, Callie Torres… I mean, Sara Ramirez just was Callie! She had a few dates before Arizona Robbins came along in season five, but honestly, those were just warm-ups. Calzona – that was everything! Seriously, the chemistry was insane. They actually got married, and even better, they raised Sofia together – Callie’s sweet little girl with Mark Sloan. They went through so much – Arizona losing her leg, that whole infidelity thing… it was devastating when they finally divorced in season eleven, but even then, it was still iconic. I’m not even a little bit sorry for saying Calzona was the best!
Many fans were heartbroken when Sara Ramirez left Grey’s Anatomy in season 12, seemingly ending the beloved relationship between Callie and Arizona. While Callie moved away with a new partner, the departure of Jessica Capshaw at the end of season 14 offered a chance for reconciliation, with a single Callie eager to welcome Arizona to New York City. It’s a moment fans wish Ramirez had been a part of.

Let’s remember the very first heartbreaking romance on Grey’s Anatomy. When intern Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) met heart patient Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in season two, it was instant chemistry. Izzie quickly fell in love with the charming but grumpy Denny, and viewers did too.
We all had a feeling their relationship wouldn’t work out, and sadly, we were right. His health got worse, and in a desperate attempt to get him a heart transplant faster, she risked her career by disconnecting his heart pump. He did receive a new heart, but tragically passed away from a stroke just hours later, as the television season ended.
Even after his death, his legacy continued when Izzie received an inheritance of $8.7 million and used it to establish the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic – a free healthcare facility at the hospital. And for those of us who knew him, hearing Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” still brings back memories and it’s never quite the same as it used to be, even after all this time.

Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) had other romances during their time at Seattle Grace Hospital. However, their most significant connection began in season five. Their on-again, off-again relationship caused them both a lot of heartache, and tragically, they both died in the plane crash at the end of season eight. They will be missed.

Chief Webber and Ellis Grey, Meredith’s mother and a talented surgeon, had an affair while both were married to other people. This caused significant disruption to Meredith’s family and ultimately resulted in the birth of Maggie Pierce, who joined the show in season 10.
Their forbidden romance was doomed from the start, especially since Ellis suffered from Alzheimer’s and passed away in the third season. However, it deeply affected many aspects of the story.

Izzie and Alex consistently supported each other through tough breakups, and their connection had the potential to become a truly great love story. Unfortunately, Katherine Heigl’s departure from the show after their wedding created yet another painful storyline where a partner suddenly disappears, similar to what happened with Burke earlier in the series.
No one anticipated that Alex’s (Justin Chambers) departure from Grey’s Anatomy in early 2020 would be explained by him secretly raising twins with Izzie on a farm. The surprising reveal offered a reason for him leaving his wife that, while unexpected, at least avoided portraying him as completely unsympathetic to fans.

Let me tell you, navigating relationships after trauma can be incredibly challenging, and Cristina and Owen’s story is a prime example. They did manage to get married, which is a win, but it wasn’t without its hurdles. Owen, dealing with severe PTSD, actually had a night terror where he almost harmed Cristina in his sleep. It was a terrifying moment, and thankfully, they worked through it, but it definitely tested their relationship.
Their relationship fell apart after she became pregnant and decided to have an abortion, something he struggled to cope with. They eventually divorced, and it became clear that Cristina’s biggest passion was, and always would be, her work. And that’s perfectly fine.

Despite a difficult first marriage, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) found love again with anesthesiologist Ben Warren (Jason George). Their relationship hasn’t been without challenges – Ben’s frequent career changes (from surgeon to firefighter and back to a surgical resident) and Miranda’s serious heart attack put them to the test. The risks of Ben’s job as a firefighter caused stress, explored in both Grey’s Anatomy and its spin-off, Station 19. However, it seems like nothing can break these two apart.

After a series of relationships, Alex might have finally found his match in fellow determined doctor Jo (Camilla Luddington). However, their path to marriage – which finally happened in the season 14 finale – wasn’t easy. They had to overcome Jo’s history of a difficult and abusive marriage and Alex’s past mistake of violently assaulting a colleague. (It was unfortunate what happened to DeLuca, even if the situation appeared differently at the time.)
When they finally got married and she changed her last name, I honestly thought it was it – they were the couple, destined to be together forever! It felt like everything we’d been hoping for was finally happening. But then, when Chambers suddenly left the show mid-season 16, it just…destroyed me. It proved how wrong I was, and it was absolutely heartbreaking.

We first met Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) in season six, and her storyline initially focused on her history with Owen and how it could impact his relationship with Cristina. However, by the next season, Teddy became involved in a classic Grey’s Anatomy doctor-patient romance with Henry Burton (Scott Foley). They quickly got married—he needed her health insurance to continue his medical treatment—and unexpectedly fell in love.
It was heartbreaking to watch him pass away during surgery in season eight – a truly devastating moment, especially for Teddy. Owen, being the thoughtful person he is, actually let her go from her job afterward. He knew she was too dedicated to resign herself, so he took the difficult step of firing her, hoping she’d finally prioritize her own well-being and move forward.

Richard struggled as his wife, Adele, declined with Alzheimer’s, and he unexpectedly found himself being pursued by Jackson’s mother, Catherine Avery (played by Debbie Allen). He turned her down, explaining that he was married and didn’t want to repeat a past mistake of infidelity.
Although Adele passed away during season nine, Richard eventually grew closer to Catherine, and they were married and happy from seasons eleven through sixteen. However, as is typical for Grey’s Anatomy, their relationship hit a rough patch. Catherine’s attempts to control things after Meredith’s insurance fraud at the end of season fifteen led to a separation. They later reconciled, especially after Richard faced a life-threatening situation.

Honestly, watching Owen and Amelia’s relationship felt like a rollercoaster. It was definitely intense, but not in a good way – more like constant struggle than genuine happiness. They just couldn’t seem to agree on what they wanted out of life, especially when it came to having kids, which was a huge issue for Owen considering his history with Cristina. And then, on top of everything, they had to deal with Amelia’s struggles with addiction and her battle with a brain tumor. They even went through a marriage and a divorce – it was a lot!
To make things even more complicated, Teddy unexpectedly returned while Owen was fostering a child and dealing with the teen mother’s addiction—and she was pregnant with Owen’s baby. Now, Owen and Teddy are attempting to navigate a relationship, though it’s proving difficult. Meanwhile, Amelia has started a family with the new doctor, Link (Chris Carmack).

Could Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) be Meredith’s next big romance? Things are looking good! After a strong start in season 14, he returned in season 18 to join Meredith in Minnesota. What initially seemed like a casual connection has definitely become something more.
Their relationship grew quickly after he moved to Boston to be with her and her children, and they bought a house together. Hopefully, she’ll continue to be with him, choosing him and loving him for a long time to come.

We were genuinely hoping Amelia and Dr. Kai Bartley (E.R. Fightmaster) would work out. Amelia hasn’t had much luck in love on Grey’s Anatomy—between her divorce from Owen and Link turning down her proposal—but she seemed to have a real connection with Kai. They both love neuroscience, and Kai isn’t afraid to challenge Amelia when she starts to undermine her own happiness. (And Amelia definitely has a habit of doing that!)
Ultimately, Kai’s decision not to have children, combined with the fact that they lived far apart, caused the relationship to end when Kai accepted a job in London.

During the third season, Alex Karev experienced a heartbreaking romance when an unidentified pregnant woman, later revealed to be Elizabeth Reaser, was brought to the hospital after a ferryboat accident, suffering from amnesia. As they connected, Alex assisted her in creating a new life, giving her the name Ava. After giving birth, her memory returned, and she revealed her true identity as Rebecca Pope, explaining she had escaped an abusive marriage.
She briefly reunited with her husband before re-entering Alex’s life in season four, sharing the news that she was pregnant. However, this turned out to be a false belief caused by a mental health condition, and when Rebecca attempted suicide, Alex understood she needed professional help. He made the difficult decision to have her admitted to a psychiatric facility and said goodbye.

Cristina Yang appears on this list again, but mostly because of how her relationship with Preston Burke ended. Their romance was the opposite of Meredith and Derek’s; Burke was often unkind, and it was deeply wrong for him to let Cristina secretly perform his surgeries after he was injured. To then be angry with her for admitting it? Absolutely not.
So, he abandoned her at the wedding and completely cut her out of his life – a decision that came after he was fired from the show due to inappropriate behavior towards cast member T.R. Knight. Honestly, it was probably for the best. When he reappeared in season 10, offering Cristina his hospital in Switzerland to support Owen, it felt like the absolute minimum he could do. It’s pretty clear we’re not fans of Burke, right?
