Imagine a limousine pulling up, and then getting a behind-the-scenes look at Hannah Montana with Miley Cyrus herself, 20 years after the show first aired.
During the 20th anniversary special, released on Disney+ and Hulu on March 24th, the Grammy-winning artist revealed some surprising details about her time on the Disney Channel. She confessed to having crushes on co-stars Dylan Sprouse, Nick Jonas, and Mitchel Musso, admitting they eventually replaced a childhood crush on a classmate named Jeff, whom she knew back in Nashville.
Miley confessed she had a crush on her ‘Hannah Montana’ costar, Mitchel Musso, who played Oliver. She playfully explained that she quickly moved on from a previous boyfriend, Jeff, because she was so excited about her feelings for Mitchel. She felt like she was all set with her new crush!
Miley Cyrus admitted she may have weirded out her costar, Emily Osment (who played her best friend Lilly on the show), with some of her unusual food preferences while filming.
She admitted to a strange habit: pouring Diet Coke over her white rice instead of soy sauce at Panda Express. She explained it was a personal quirk and jokingly referenced a friend, Emily, questioning her taste, saying Emily had wondered, ‘Who is this unsophisticated person?’
Miley joked, “I am from the south in a way that it’s really hard to describe.”
I’ve always believed who you are is deeply connected to where you come from, and she’s the same way. She really credits her upbringing – and specifically her parents, Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus – for shaping the person she is today. It’s clear their influence is a huge part of her identity.
Miley said that she wonders if life would be different now without the show, either positively or negatively. She added that few families share the unique experience her family had.

She’s also happy that she and Billy Ray were able to resolve their disagreement from last year.
Miley shared that she’s thrilled he’s joining the show, explaining that their connection resonates with viewers. She believes that when she and her father are on good terms, it creates a positive feeling for everyone watching, and it’s heartwarming to see the family getting along.

Miley Cyrus shared details about the show, including surprise appearances by Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, in the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special. You can now watch the special on Disney+ and Hulu.

Miley Cyrus playfully revealed that when she got the role of Hannah Montana and moved to work on the show, she ended things with a childhood crush named Jeff and instead started dating her co-star, Mitchel Musso, who played Oliver.
Miley recently revealed on Disney+’s 20th anniversary special that she had a crush on Mitchel Musso. She jokingly explained that this led to her ending her relationship with Jeff, saying, ‘It’s all about Mitchell now!’ She felt completely happy and content with this new focus.

Miley jokingly asked for the tea kettle, referencing a past moment. She explained that Taylor Swift ended up in the Hannah Montana movie because it was early in Taylor’s career, and the filmmakers needed someone who could realistically perform in a barn setting – just like both of them had done.
Miley also pointed out that Taylor wrote the final song, “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home,” for the 2009 movie, and called it a timeless hit. She said Taylor really delivered with that song.

The singer shared with Alex Cooper that she and Dylan Sprouse were secretly dating. She admitted she had a crush on him and thought he was really cute.
I always knew there was something special about Dylan! It turned out he and his twin brother, Cole Sprouse, were actually my boyfriend’s family. I remember their dad used to take us all out for sushi, and I loved learning about the culture. It was amazing getting to hang out with both of them – a total two-for-one deal! Seriously, having both brothers there was the best.

Though she didn’t mention her fiancé by name, Miley alluded to her love for Maxx Morando.
I feel incredibly lucky to have so much love from my family, and now I’ve found a new kind of love that feels like a really important step in my life as a woman – building a future with someone special. Everyone dreams of feeling loved, and I’ve always experienced that from the people around me.

Oh my gosh, I was dying to know what it was like on set! Miley was asking Selena – Selena Gomez! – about filming, and it’s just… I can totally see how it would all be a crazy blur. Selena was Mikayla on Hannah Montana – she was in three episodes! – and honestly, just picturing them together gives me chills. I wish I’d been a fly on the wall!
Selena recalled wearing the strange blue makeup for an alien costume. She admitted feeling self-conscious about it at the time, explaining, ‘We were just teenagers, and I wanted to feel pretty, but I just felt awful.’
Miley readily agreed, adding that despite portraying enemies on screen, they could now repair their relationship.

She explained that she had the Jonas Brothers open for her concerts because she was dating Nick Jonas from 2006 to 2007.
Miley explained that she toured with the Jonas Brothers because Nick Jonas was her boyfriend, and she didn’t want to be away from him. She basically said she asked if he could join her on tour, and they agreed to let him open for her shows.
She added, “I was always just like, ‘Well, it’ll be more fun if Nick is there.'”

Miley and her father shared a heartwarming reunion on the set of Hannah Montana. Miley jokingly said he’d gotten a new haircut thanks to her.
She told Alex she was thrilled he was joining them, explaining that their connection meant a lot to the show’s viewers. She believes that when she and her father are on good terms, it has a positive effect on everyone, and it’s simply heartwarming to see the Cyrus family getting along.

Emily Osment—who played Miley Stewart’s BFF Lilly—had a special dynamic with Miley onset.
I felt like Emily was a true partner, especially since I was still learning the ropes,” she explained. “We knew we could always rely on each other – whether it was nailing the timing of a scene, working through rehearsals, or just having each other’s backs.
I’ll never forget going to Panda Express with Miley! She always jokes that she probably didn’t make the best first impression, but honestly, it’s one of my favorite memories. It just shows you, even stars have those slightly awkward, totally relatable moments, right?
That was my absolute favorite thing to do,” she said. “I used to get white rice at Panda Express and pour Diet Coke over it instead of soy sauce – it’s kind of a weird habit. I can see why someone might have thought I was a bit of a country bumpkin!
As Miley quipped, “I am from the south in a way that it’s really hard to describe.”

Honestly, getting named a Disney Legend is incredible, but one of the best parts? I get to park with a special Disney Legend parking pass! It actually says ‘Disney Legend’ on it, and it’s a total lifesaver – seriously, it makes everything so much easier.
Miley playfully explained that she photographs her parking space and sends the picture to her friends as a reminder of her status. She joked that if anyone tries to give her advice, she can simply point to the photo and say, ‘Disney Legend Parking!’

When directly asked whether her character should end up with Jake (Cody Linley) or Jesse (Drew Roy), Miley initially said she couldn’t choose, explaining they were both ‘out there’ in the world. However, she then quietly admitted she preferred Jake.
You know, it’s funny. I’ve noticed he’s always so complimentary about me in interviews, and I definitely take note of that! But Jesse? Radio silence. I haven’t heard a single kind word, which is…interesting, to say the least.
The Grammy-winning artist playfully confessed she enjoys the idea of a romantic storyline with the character Jake Ryan for her role.
