Cult classic movie Trainspotting is heading to West End for ‘seismic’ new musical – Here’s what you need to know

As a critic, I’m thrilled to see Danny Boyle’s groundbreaking Trainspotting returning to screens this summer. It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since its initial release, but this is a fantastic opportunity for a new generation to experience this iconic film – and for those of us who loved it the first time around to revisit its raw energy.

The groundbreaking movie that changed British film in the 1990s is being adapted into a new musical, promising to be both surprising and impactful, and will premiere in London’s West End.

The new series comes from the author of Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh, and is directed by Caroline Jay Ranger.

The show’s first cast member has been revealed: Scottish actor Robbie Scott will play the role of Renton, previously made famous by Ewan McGregor, in his West End debut.

According to Welsh, this stage production has more emotional depth than either the original book or the film. Previous theatrical adaptations of Trainspotting have been highly praised and deeply affecting, and the movie’s soundtrack is legendary. Combining the music and lyrics felt like a natural way to create a powerful, challenging, and enjoyable performance.

We encourage people to both thoughtfully consider the world around them and fully embrace life’s joys – to laugh, sing, and experience everything that makes us human. This offering supports both of those important needs.

The show will feature new, energetic songs co-written by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh, alongside popular tracks from the film, including music by artists like Underworld and Iggy Pop.

Trainspotting is famous for its raw and honest depiction of heroin addiction in Edinburgh during the 1990s. The film centers on Mark Renton, played by Ewan McGregor, and his group of friends: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Spud (Ewen Bremner), and Tommy (Kevin McKidd).

When this film came out, it was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences. It absolutely dominated the box office, becoming the highest-grossing UK film of the year with over $76 million earned worldwide. Now, looking back, it’s rightly considered a true classic – one of the best British films ever made, in my opinion.

As a total film buff, I was thrilled to hear Trainspotting the Musical is still going strong! Honestly, it’s being described as something truly special – totally energetic, really gets you thinking, and surprisingly uplifting. Even if you’re going in a bit doubtful, people are saying it’s an experience that’ll totally blow you away and leave you feeling… well, different!

“Trainspotting is not just a show. It’s a moment. It’s a manifesto. It’s who we are.”

The show is coming to London’s Royal Theatre Haymarket starting July 15th, and tickets are now available on the official Trainspotting website.
