‘Ghostbusters’ Director Joins White-Knuckle Supernatural Thriller ’71 Minutes’

When Sony Pictures picked up the rights to a new supernatural thriller called 71 Minutes, they turned to an experienced director: Jason Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Reitman will produce the film through his production company, Ghost Corp, alongside Erica Mills. After his success with Ghostbusters, it was expected he’d return to the supernatural genre, and 71 Minutes seems to be a major project – the script sparked a competitive bidding war with over 20 companies vying for it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ivan Reitman is not currently set to direct the upcoming thriller 71 Minutes. The film follows a man desperately trying to escape those chasing him, with only 71 minutes before sunrise. The story is based on an original screenplay by Ian Shorr, who previously wrote the 2021 film Infinite and the upcoming Keanu Reeves movie Shiver. There was a lot of competition for the project, but Sony ultimately won the rights.

Jason Reitman is well-suited to direct 71 Minutes because he’s proven he can handle fast-paced, suspenseful stories. His recent film, Saturday Night, showed the chaotic 90 minutes before the first Saturday Night Live broadcast in real-time. He also directed The Front Runner, which quickly followed the downfall of Gary Hart’s presidential campaign. Reitman isn’t new to supernatural themes either; he produced the cult favorite Jennifer’s Body early in his career. More recently, he successfully revived the Ghostbusters franchise, directing and co-writing Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021 as a sequel to his father’s films, and returning to produce and co-write the 2024 sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which continued the series’ rich history and introduced new monsters.

This is a developing story…
