Mel Schilling Dies 2 Weeks After Sharing Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

Mel Schilling never lost sight of what matters most in life.

I’m absolutely heartbroken. Our beloved host from Married at First Sight U.K. has passed away. It’s just… devastating. Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed it yesterday – she lost her battle with colon cancer after two years. She was only 54! You could just feel how much her family meant to her, and it’s so clear that was the most important thing to her. I’m just… completely gutted.

Following her death, Brisbane shared on Instagram how Schilling excelled as a mother to their 11-year-old daughter, Maddie, all while managing her work on television.

Many of you knew her as Mel Schilling, the strong and beloved figure from Married at First Sight and a prominent face in reality television. But to her daughter, Maddie, and me, she was simply ‘Melsie’ – an amazing mother, someone we looked up to, and a cherished friend.

I was really touched hearing about Erin’s departure and her friendship with Schilling, who was such a fantastic host on the Australian version of the show. Schilling faced her health challenges with incredible courage, grace, and a beautiful way of connecting with others – it was truly inspiring to see.

He recounted that even though he believed cancer had robbed his mother of her speech, she managed to pull him close and whisper a final message for him and his sister, Maddie. He said it took all her strength, and that simple act perfectly captured who she was – always thinking of others, even at the very end.

Just two weeks before she passed away, the dating coach revealed she had received a terminal diagnosis. This came at the same time she was scheduled to start a promising new clinical trial, as her illness had spread to her lungs in February 2024.

In a post on March 12th, she shared that her cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite receiving radiation treatment, her doctors have told her there are no further options. She wrote that she’s feeling weaker, but remains determined to fight and is grateful for the amazing support she’s receiving.

After the passing of Schilling, Channel 4, the broadcaster of both the UK and Australian versions of Married at First Sight, credited her with being essential to the show’s popularity around the world.

The network shared on Instagram that she was a strong supporter of women, deeply cared about healthy relationships, and worked to bring people together through love. They said everyone who knew her would miss these qualities, and they expressed sympathy for those grieving her loss.
