As a huge movie fan, I’m already counting down the days until December! Everyone’s talking about “Dunesday” – that’s when Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three both come out. It’s shaping up to be a massive event, like Barbenheimer was, and should really boost ticket sales during the holidays. Honestly, with all the buzz around those two, you might not even know there’s a third big movie coming out that same month! The next Jumanji film, with Dwayne Johnson, has been set for December 11th for a while now, and a lot of us were wondering if it would be pushed back because of the Dune and Avengers releases.
Sony has moved the release date for Jumanji 3, but it’s still uncertain if the new date will hold. Variety reports the film is now planned to premiere on Christmas Day, one week after the release of Dune. It will compete with Robert Eggers’ Werwulf and a movie about a real person starring David Corenswet, who played Superman.
Will Jumanji 3 Keep Its New Christmas Release Date?

Okay, so it’s looking like both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are sticking with their December 18th release dates, which means Jumanji 3 is probably going to have to move. A lot of fans are wondering if there’s room for both Avengers and Dune to do well opening the same weekend, but apparently, theater owners are more worried about Jumanji 3. They were afraid that if Jumanji 3 opened on December 11th, it would get lost in the shuffle once Dune and Avengers really took over the theaters, since everyone was expecting huge demand for those two!
Sony decided to release Jumanji 3 during the Christmas season, hoping it will perform better after the initial excitement surrounding Dune dies down. However, it’s worth considering if Jumanji 3 might have been more successful with a release date outside of December altogether. While it’s too early to predict how much money Doomsday and Dune 3 will make, both films are likely to be popular and continue drawing audiences for weeks. Previous Avengers movies have all earned over $1 billion worldwide, and Dune: Part Two grossed nearly $715 million globally. Unless something unexpected happens, Doomsday and Dune 3 are expected to be big hits and maintain strong box office numbers long after their opening weekends.
Moving Jumanji 3 to a Christmas release probably won’t help much. The limited number of available screens was already a concern, and that problem remains. There likely won’t be enough time for excitement around Doomsday and Dune 3 to fade, meaning Jumanji 3 will still struggle to stand out at the box office. It will face stiff competition from those bigger films. While previous Jumanji movies did well alongside Star Wars films, this situation is different. Before, Jumanji and Star Wars were the main attractions during the holidays. This year, Jumanji is clearly third in line behind the Doomsday and Dune releases.
Sony is hoping the next Jumanji movie is a big success, both as a satisfying end to the recent films with Dwayne Johnson and as a tribute to the entire Jumanji series. However, releasing it now could be risky, as it’s competing with two very popular blockbusters. It might be better to move the release date to a time with less competition, allowing Jumanji to become the top choice for movie fans. Unfortunately, December is already crowded, and dates in 2027 are quickly being taken. It will be interesting to see how Sony handles the release of Jumanji 3.
