Get ready to be 30, flirty and thriving all over again.
More than 20 years after Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo famously showed off their red tongues in 13 Going on 30, Netflix has confirmed a remake is coming, starring Logan Lerman and Emily Bader. The announcement was made on March 24th.
Jennifer will produce the new movie, and Brett Haley, who previously directed Bader’s film People We Meet on Vacation, will be directing it. The original film’s director, Gary Winick, sadly passed away from cancer in 2011.
The 2004 film 13 Going on 30 tells the story of Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who magically wakes up as a 30-year-old woman. She quickly discovers that her adult life isn’t as perfect as she imagined – she’s estranged from her childhood best friend, Matty Flamhaff, and isn’t living the fun, exciting life she always wanted. The movie follows Jenna as she tries to create the life of her dreams.
Since appearing in the popular romantic comedy, Jennifer – who has three children, Violet (20), Seraphina (17), and Samuel (13), with her ex-husband Ben Affleck – has said the role has stayed with her throughout her career. She considers Jenna Rink to be one of her very best performances, ranking it as either her number one or number two favorite.
Jennifer recently shared on the show Not Gonna Lie that creating her character was a spontaneous and joyful process. She fondly remembers improvising and having a lot of fun while building the character and the overall set. She added that the character remains a highlight of her work.
The 53-year-old actress recently shared that her kids and their friends know her movie, 13 Going on 30—which also featured Christa B. Allen and Judy Greer—but the younger generation considers it embarrassingly outdated.

You know, as a mom, I’ve definitely seen some interesting attempts to get out of things! Recently, I had a couple of calls during sleepovers where my kids suddenly claimed they had headaches. It was a little suspicious, honestly! I mean, they’d never mentioned headaches before, but suddenly needed me to come rescue them? It definitely made me raise an eyebrow, but you gotta love their creativity!
Although Jennifer is now executive producing the reboot, she wasn’t initially enthusiastic about revisiting the project. In fact, when Ariana Grande referenced the film in her 2018 music video “thank u next,” the Alias actress dismissed the possibility of a sequel.
“Are you saying something like in the movie ‘15 Going on 17’?” Jennifer playfully asked while on Good Morning America. “Let’s not overreact. Things are fine as they are.”

In the 2004 film, Jennifer Garner played Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old who magically becomes 30 years old and tries to figure out adult life after wishing on her birthday.
Following the conclusion of Alias in 2006, Jennifer Garner appeared in several films, including Juno, Dallas Buyers Club, Men, Women & Children, Miracles from Heaven, Love, Simon, and Peppermint. She later returned to television with the 2018 HBO series Camping.
As the 15th anniversary of 13 Going on 30 approached in 2019, Jennifer Garner was on Good Morning America and asked about making another movie. She playfully responded, “Like 15 Going on 50?” and then suggested it was best to leave the original film as it is and not try to create a sequel.
As someone who juggles a lot – career, family, and everything in between – I really admire what Jennifer Garner has built. Beyond her acting, she co-founded Once Upon a Farm, which is fantastic! And as a mom to Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel, even while co-parenting with Ben Affleck, she truly seems to make it all work. It’s inspiring to see someone balance so much with grace.

Before she became a major star, Brie Larson had some early roles many people might not remember! Back in 2004, she appeared as one of the ‘Six Chicks’ in 13 Going on 30 and also starred in the teen comedy Sleepover. Since then, Larson’s career has taken off, with notable roles in the TV series United States of Tara (2009-2011) and films like 21 Jumpstreet, Trainwreck, and Captain America.
In 2016, Larson won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the film Room.

Oh my gosh, and it gets even BETTER! Mark Ruffalo, another one of the cast from 13 Going on 30—can you believe it?!—is a huge part of the Avengers movies too! He and Brie Larson were both in Avengers: Endgame together! It’s like a total 13 Going on 30 reunion… but with superheroes! I’m seriously obsessed with finding these connections!
Mark Ruffalo gained romantic comedy fame playing the adult Matt Flamhaff in 13 Going on 30. Around that time, he also starred in popular rom-coms like Rumor Has It… alongside Jennifer Aniston and Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon. More recently, Ruffalo has received critical acclaim and four Oscar nominations for his dramatic roles in films such as The Kids Are All Right, Foxcatcher, and Spotlight. He won an Emmy in 2020 and a Golden Globe in 2021 for his performance in I Know This Much Is True.
He’s been married to Sunrise Coigney since 2000 and the duo share three kids together.

Do you remember Ashley Benson from that movie? She was one of the Six Chicks with Larson. The same year the film came out, 2004, Benson started playing Abby Deveraux on Days of Our Lives. She became really well-known in 2010 when she landed the role of Hanna Marin in the popular series Pretty Little Liars. Since Pretty Little Liars ended in 2017, Benson has appeared in the film Her Smell with Elisabeth Moss.
I’m so thrilled for her! She’s embarked on the most amazing journey – becoming a mom! She and Brandon Davis welcomed their beautiful daughter, Aspen, in February 2024, and I couldn’t be happier for them both.

Oh my gosh, Judy Greer! She was amazing as Lucy Wyman in ’13 Going on 30′ – seriously, the perfect frenemy to Jennifer Garner. And get this – even though their characters were always battling it out on screen, Jennifer said they’re actually still super close friends in real life! It just warms my heart, honestly. They’re both so talented and I love seeing that kind of genuine connection.
Katherine Heigl is famous for her memorable roles in movies like The Wedding Planner and 27 Dresses. She’s also appeared in a number of other popular films, including The Descendants (2011), Carrie (2013), and Jurassic World (2015).

Andy Serkis, who played Jenna’s boss at her dream magazine, Poise, is now famous for his motion capture work in The Lord of the Rings films.
He co-founded The Imaginarium, a motion-capture production company, in 2011. The studio’s work included the 2018 film, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

Christa B. Allen started her acting career with a role in the film 13 Going on 30. She then gained recognition with appearances in popular TV shows like Wizards of Waverly Place and Grey’s Anatomy. In 2009, she played a younger version of Jennifer Garner in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Her breakout role came from 2011 to 2015 when she starred in the ABC drama Revenge.
In November 2021, she officially turned 30 and we officially felt old.
