Comics are proving to be excellent source material for TV shows. Invincible and The Boys are prime examples, successfully bringing popular, detailed stories to a wider audience and captivating viewers. Now, Amazon is adapting another highly-regarded comic – often considered one of the greatest fantasy comics ever – and the show will be led by the former showrunner of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing an animated series based on the acclaimed comic book Monstress, according to Variety. Steven Maeda, who co-created and showran Netflix’s One Piece, will write and executive produce the series alongside Tiffany Greshler. Both Maeda and Greshler will also serve as co-showrunners. The story is set in a fantastical world inspired by Asia and follows a young woman who shares a body with a monster. She embarks on a journey to uncover her history and find justice for her mother’s death, joined by a unique group of allies—including a talking cat and a part-human, part-fox girl—as they become entangled in a conflict between humans and supernatural beings. Monstress explores the question of how we can rise above our inner demons when the world itself seems to create them.
Monstress Is the Perfect Fantasy Comic for an Adult Animated Adaptation

As a huge fan, I truly believe Monstress, created by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, is absolutely made for an adult animated series. It’s already at issue #60 and it’s become this incredible, sweeping fantasy story. The world they’ve built is just massive and feels perfectly suited for the screen. What really grabs me are the characters – they’re so layered and the conflicts are intense, often with the main character, Maika Halfwolf, facing off against entire worlds. Plus, it’s not your typical fantasy; there’s a real thread of cosmic horror running through it, which makes sense considering Maika is psychically connected to a massively powerful, otherworldly monster.
Fans have long hoped for a movie based on Monstress, but a television series feels like a better fit. The comic book is known for its intricate, multi-part stories, which naturally lend themselves to a season-by-season, episode-by-episode format – especially given how complex and detailed the Monstress world is.
