3) Serial Experiments Lain
I’m a huge fan of Serial Experiments Lain, and honestly, it’s still unlike anything else I’ve seen, especially considering it came out in 1998! It’s a 13-episode series that really dives into technology and what makes us us, but it doesn’t do it in a straightforward way. It’s definitely one you might need to rewatch to fully grasp everything, because the story jumps around a bit. But trust me, it’s worth it! You can tell so much thought went into how everything connects, and once it clicks, you really appreciate the deep ideas it’s exploring. Plus, the visuals are just amazing and add so much to the story. Seriously, if you’re looking for something thought-provoking, give it a second look – you won’t regret it.
2) Psycho-Pass
While not overly complicated, the anime series Psycho-Pass is full of subtle references to classic literature, cleverly woven into its story. It’s rewarding to rewatch simply to catch these allusions, but the show also offers deep philosophical discussions about free will, technology, and government control that deserve a second viewing. The plot is so captivating and the characters so well-developed that you might miss these important themes the first time around, making Psycho-Pass a series worth revisiting.

Similar to Psycho-Pass, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is immediately engaging, but it also rewards close attention with its clever foreshadowing and intricate details. The series subtly hints at major plot twists from the very beginning, making a re-watch incredibly satisfying as you notice all the clues. Beyond its compelling story, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood explores thought-provoking themes that make it worth revisiting. You’ll initially enjoy it for the excitement and entertainment, but you’ll want to watch it again to fully appreciate its depth.
