Following news that Sony is closing Dark Outlaw Games, the studio’s founder, Jason Blundell, has spoken about the decision. During a livestream with former level designer JCbackfire, Blundell revealed that the team was developing a very promising game.
Blundell explained he was saddened by the loss of a promising game they were developing, calling it something special. Despite having a good relationship with Sony, whom he praised as a great partner, he admitted the situation was deeply disappointing. Unfortunately, he couldn’t share specifics due to confidentiality agreements, stating they were unable to discuss the details publicly.
Blundell explained that the closure of Dark Outlaw Games was mainly due to shifting priorities and circumstances. He still feels disappointed about the potential of their unfinished project, believing fans would have really enjoyed it. He emphasized that while the decision was difficult, it was a result of changing times and a refocus of efforts, and that he’s been assured of the project’s potential appeal.
JCbackfire shared a similar feeling of disappointment, mentioning that after five years in game development, none of his contributions will actually be experienced by players. Despite this, both he and the other person remain hopeful for what’s to come, stating they’re discouraged but not defeated.
According to a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Sony recently shut down Dark Outlaw Games and is also reducing its mobile game development efforts. This affects approximately 50 employees.
Schreier reported that Sony plans to concentrate on a small number of key projects that will have a big impact. They will continue to maintain existing games like MLB The Show Mobile and Ratchet and Clank: Ranger Rumble as well.
I was so excited when Dark Outlaw Games was announced back in March 2025! It was founded by Jason Blundell, who’s a huge name – he used to work at Treyarch and was one of the key people behind Call of Duty Zombies. Because of his background, everyone assumed they’d be making shooter games, and as a first-party PlayStation studio, the possibilities seemed endless!
Although the studio was only publicly announced last year, it seems the team had been secretly working on projects for some time. In a conversation with Jeff Gerstmann on his Bonus Podcast, studio head Blundell explained they had been “working in secret” before the official announcement. He also mentioned the studio was still expanding and would share more about its projects “when the time was right.”
Interestingly, before joining Naughty Dog, Blundell co-founded Deviation Games in 2021, a studio that also worked with PlayStation. However, he left Deviation Games in 2022, and unfortunately, the studio closed down in 2024 without ever releasing a game.
