HBO Max Just Added the Latest Installment in a Billion Dollar Action Franchise (And There’s Already Another Sequel on the Way)

HBO Max is planning its April lineup, but first, it’s adding a few more titles in March. The streaming service just released the latest movie from a hugely popular action series, and fans are excited for the remaining four films to be added soon. Before April’s new releases – including movies like Twister and The Mummy – this is one of the last major additions for March.

The John Wick movies, starring Keanu Reeves, have earned $1.1 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful action series of all time. The latest installment, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, premiered on HBO Max on March 27th and takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. This film follows Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a skilled assassin seeking revenge for her father’s death. Ballerina is now available to stream alongside the other John Wick films, with more projects planned, including a fifth John Wick movie and a spin-off focusing on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina Expands the Universe With Intense Gun-Fu Action

While not a blockbuster like other films in the John Wick series, Ballerina earned $137 million worldwide, making it the fourth-highest grossing film of the five. This was considered a bit of a disappointment given its $90 million production cost. Interestingly, critics gave it a respectable 75% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which was the lowest score of any film in the franchise. Some found the story and script a little weak and felt it didn’t have the same flashy style as the other John Wick movies. However, Ballerina successfully broadened the John Wick universe, moving beyond the usual setting of the Continental hotel.

Ballerina is a great addition to the John Wick universe, capturing the spirit of the series while feeling a bit more realistic. The film expands on the history of key groups like the High Table and the Ruska Roma, giving us a better look at how The Director operates and the harsh upbringing of its assassins. We also meet new groups, like The Cult. But don’t worry, it still has the exciting, fast-paced action you love, and Ana de Armas shines as a resourceful and quick-thinking hero who relies on agility and speed rather than just pure strength.

What’s New on HBO Max?

As a movie critic, I’ve gotta say, HBO Max really came through in March. They started the month strong with a great mix of films – everything from the rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love and the mind-bending Everything Everywhere All at Once, to some classic horror with the Final Destination series and a comedy staple like The 40-Year-Old Virgin. They also dropped some interesting new shows like DTF St. Louis and Rooster. And the good news doesn’t stop there! April 1st is bringing even more content, including several films from the Alien franchise and the beloved witchy favorite, Practical Magic.
