Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai Creators Talk Season 2, Major Death, And Future Crossovers (Exclusive)

I’ve been following the Baki The Grappler franchise for a long time, and it’s consistently delivered intense action. It’s great to see the story of Baki Hanma continue to gain popularity, especially with its recent seasons on Netflix. At Anime Japan this year, they announced a second season of Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai, which is fantastic news! I was lucky enough to sit down with the anime’s director, Toshiki Hirano, and a producer from TMS Entertainment, Kei Watabiki, to talk all about it. We discussed the new season, a major character’s fate in the last season, and a lot of other interesting details.

We began by asking Hirano, a long-time contributor to the Baki series, about the challenges of adapting the Son of the Ogre’s story into animation. He explained that animating each frame required careful attention because manga and anime frames differ significantly. Unlike manga, where scenes can expand vertically or horizontally, anime has strict limitations on movement and length. Figuring out the right pacing and capturing the dynamic action proved particularly difficult.

Talking Baki’s Fights

During a recent interview with the director and a producer from TMS, we at egmr.ru asked them about their favorite fights from the Baki series. They quickly agreed that the “Father and Son War” stood out. They explained that adapting this intricate battle from the original manga was a special challenge, and they worked hard to create an animation that truly did it justice. This fight saw Baki face off against his incredibly strong father, Yujiro Hanma, with Baki ultimately winning. Now, Baki is known as the strongest being on Earth, but that title is being challenged by the resurrection of Musashi Miyamoto in the newest season.

Hirano explained the research process behind adapting Miyamoto Musashi for the anime. Since this version of Musashi is Itagaki’s interpretation, it differs from traditional portrayals. They conducted thorough research into his origins and background to create an authentic character, especially considering his regional ties.

Saying Goodbye to The Sea King

The anime Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai surprised some viewers when a major character died. While characters often get injured in the series, deaths are rare. In the fight between Sea King Retsu and Musashi, Musashi ultimately killed Retsu, showcasing his incredible strength. We spoke with the director and producer about this shocking turn of events and their reasoning behind the character’s death in the new season.

The manga portrayed this character’s death in a subtle way, avoiding strong emotional reactions. However, for the animated version, we wanted to make the scene more impactful and moving. We used music and carefully planned the scene’s presentation to heighten the emotional effect, and it’s rewarding to see the audience respond so well. We always put our best effort into the show, but this episode, with such an important character’s passing, received extra attention. Interestingly, this was also the final recording session for Rikiya Koyama, the Japanese voice actor for the character. We held a special farewell and a celebratory party – we called it the “Sea King” party – to mark his last day with the production.

Talking Baki Crossovers

Baki has become a popular anime on Netflix, so many fans were surprised and excited to hear about a crossover with Kengan Ashura. Both shows are known for intense fighting, creating a perfect opportunity for exciting new battles and challenges for the characters. During an interview with TMS producer Kei Watabiki about Baki Hanma Vs. Kengan Ashura, we asked if there were plans for future crossovers involving the character known as the Son of the Ogre.

As a huge fan of both series, I know a lot of people are wondering about future crossovers, and right now, we aren’t actively planning any. But trust me, there’s still so much amazing stuff hidden within the world of Baki that even longtime fans haven’t discovered yet! Our biggest goal right now is to get Baki in front of a whole new audience. We definitely learned a lot from the Kengan Ashura collaboration, and if another opportunity like that comes up – something that feels like a perfect fit – we’d absolutely jump at it!

I was really struck by what the creators had to say to the fans, both longtime viewers and newcomers. They emphasized that no matter where you jump in, the Baki series has something to offer everyone. They expressed hope that people would continue to enjoy the show for a long time to come. When talking specifically about Baki-Dou, they strongly recommended watching the original Japanese version, particularly highlighting the incredible performance of Naoya Uchida, who voices Musashi Miyamoto. They felt his portrayal truly captured the essence of a samurai from centuries ago, making it believable even in a modern setting – it really comes across in his performance.

You can now watch Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai on Netflix, and a second season is coming later in 2024.
