Best Namco Game From Each Console Generation

Namco is one of the oldest and most well-known video game companies. Founded in Japan in 1955, even before video games existed, they originally made other types of entertainment. In 1978, they created their first game, Gee Bee, a block-breaking game similar to Breakout. Since then, Namco has developed many hugely popular and influential games. We’ve looked back at the company’s history to pick the best Namco game from each generation of consoles. We based our choices on what critics said when the games first came out, how much they impacted the gaming world, and, of course, how enjoyable they are to play.

1st) Galaxian

1st Gen: Atari Pong | Coleco Telstar | Magnavox Odyssey

Namco didn’t participate in the very first wave of home video game consoles, but they found early success in arcades with Galaxian in 1979. This game had a significant impact on the gaming world throughout the 1980s, both in arcades and on consoles. Galaxian is a classic shooter where players defend Earth from attacking aliens, and it served as Namco’s response to Taito’s popular Space Invaders, which came out the year before. While Galaxian was ported to many consoles and was a key game for Namco in the 70s, their next major hit would go on to become the best-selling video game of all time.

2nd) Pac-Man

2nd Gen: Atari 2600 | Channel F | ColecoVision | Intellivision | Magnavox Odyssey 2

In 1980, Namco launched Pac-Man in arcades, and it rapidly became a global phenomenon. Soon after, the game appeared on home consoles, marking Namco’s entry into the second generation of that market. Though I didn’t enjoy the Pac-Man version for the Atari 2600, it surprisingly became the best-selling game on that system, selling over 8 million copies. Furthermore, Pac-Man dominated arcades, becoming the highest-grossing arcade game ever – a record it still holds. When adjusted for inflation, Pac-Man has generated over $10.5 billion in revenue – a truly incredible amount.

3rd) R.B.I. Baseball

3rd Gen: Atari 7800 | Nintendo Entertainment System | Sega Master System

During the early years of home consoles, Namco primarily released versions of its popular arcade games, and this continued to be their approach for many years. The third generation of consoles saw numerous excellent titles, with Pro Baseball: Family Stadium (released as R.B.I. Baseball in North America) standing out as a major success. Initially a hit in Japan, the game quickly gained popularity in the United States. While the NES had many sports games, R.B.I. Baseball is frequently considered one of the best baseball titles available for the system.

4th) Galaga ‘88

4th Gen: TurboGrafx-16 | Genesis | Neo Geo | Super Nintendo Entertainment System

I remember being totally hooked on Galaga ‘88 when it came out in 1987! Namco really took an already amazing game, Galaga, and made it even better. I played it constantly on my TurboGrafx-16 – seriously, my thumbs were sore! Looking back, Namco did a lot of remakes during that generation, with games for both the TG16 and Sega Genesis, but Galaga ‘88 still stands out to me. They didn’t just update the graphics, they added new gameplay features and the music was fantastic, making the whole experience so much more immersive.

5th) Soul Edge

5th Gen: 3DO | Jaguar | PlayStation | Nintendo 64

While Namco released many of its classic arcade games for 5th generation consoles, they also created something entirely new with Soul Edge for the PlayStation. This game, the first in what would become the Soulcalibur series, was innovative for its time by making weapons a central part of the fighting. The story revolves around a powerful sword called Soul Edge, which grants immense power to its wielder. Soul Edge was a major success, launching a long-running and popular franchise, and it’s easily one of the best games from that console generation.

6th) Tekken 5

6th Gen: GameCube | Dreamcast | PlayStation 2 | Xbox

Namco, known for its successful fighting games, created both the Soulcalibur and Tekken series. While Soulcalibur continued to evolve, Tekken 5, released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, became one of the most celebrated fighting games of the 2000s. It featured a large cast of 32 characters and significant improvements over previous installments. Namco continued to support the game with updates, culminating in the Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection expansion. We ranked Tekken 5 as the 6th best fighting game of the 2000s, and it remains Namco’s standout title from that console generation.

7th) Soulcalibur IV

7th Gen: PlayStation 3 | Wii | Xbox 360

During the seventh generation of consoles, Bandai bought Namco, creating Bandai Namco Games. However, for simplicity, we’ll refer to the company as Namco throughout this list. Choosing Namco’s best game from that generation was difficult, as they released many excellent titles. Ultimately, Soulcalibur IV stood out as the best. This fifth main installment in the series significantly improved the gameplay and graphics, refining almost every element. The inclusion of characters from Star Wars also helped attract fans of that popular franchise.

8th) Dark Souls III

8th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 4 | Wii U | Xbox One

Wrapping up the acclaimed Dark Souls series, Dark Souls III was a perfect choice as Namco’s standout game from the eighth generation of consoles. Because it wasn’t limited to a single console, the game found a wide audience on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Dark Souls III brought the story that began in the first two games to a satisfying conclusion, and Namco followed it up with two highly praised expansions. The game quickly became a commercial success, selling over 10 million copies within a few years of its release.

9th) Elden Ring

9th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X|S

Choosing the best game of the ninth console generation was easy: Elden Ring clearly outperformed all other releases. It’s a fantastic action role-playing game that runs incredibly well on all ninth-generation consoles. Elden Ring received countless awards, sold over 30 million copies, and its expansion pack sold another 10 million, making it Namco’s best-selling game of the 21st century. Many consider it one of the greatest games of all time, proving Namco had a very successful ninth generation.

10th) Little Nightmares III

10th Gen: Nintendo Switch 2 | PlayStation 6 | Xbox Project Helix

There’s no clear agreement on when the next generation of consoles actually started, but many people in the gaming industry believe it began with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. If we consider that the starting point, then Namco’s best game so far is Little Nightmares III. Released in October 2025 on several platforms, including the Switch 2, it’s a fantastic addition to the Little Nightmares series. While Namco will likely release more games for the Switch 2, PlayStation 6, and Microsoft’s future console, Little Nightmares III currently stands out as their top title.
