The CBS comedy Ghosts is heading into its fifth season with a major change: the death of a key character. I’ve heard the creepiest thing about this house – apparently, the basement is haunted! It’s not just any ghosts, though. They’re called the “cholera ghosts” because of how they died, and they’re totally fixated on the water heater. Sam and Jay are planning to replace it, and honestly, I’m worried! The ghosts are threatening to cause trouble if they do, and I’m not sure what that even means when you’re dealing with spirits attached to an appliance!

In the show Ghosts, the water heater plays a surprisingly important role. When Sam and Jay move into their new home in Woodstone, Sam begins seeing ghosts after an accident. To convince Jay she’s telling the truth about her newfound ability to see them, she repairs the water heater based on the ghosts’ guidance.

As a big fan, I loved how Isaac Higgintoot – brilliantly played by Brandon Scott Jones – pointed out that the water heater is basically worshipped by the basement ghosts. They literally spend their days listening to it ‘gurgle’! It makes total sense, especially since Isaac moved down there part-time, hoping to become one of the lower level’s regulars.

Although Isaac couldn’t fix the old water heater, he held a small ceremony to honor the spirits within, demonstrating his empathy and building a strong connection with Sam. This earned him a decisive win in the primary election. However, the episode also presented a significant loss, signaling an important change in direction.

After five seasons, the TV show Ghosts has a problem with its core idea. When Sam arrived at Woodstone Mansion, her job was to help the ghosts find peace and move on to the afterlife. But so far, the show hasn’t actually let any of the ghosts move on, which means it isn’t fulfilling the original promise of Sam’s purpose.

Despite not losing a main character, this storyline introduces a compelling emotional shift in the series. By portraying the removal of the water heater as a significant loss – almost like losing a character – Ghosts demonstrates its ability to evolve and mature without needing to remove any of its core cast members.

However, the broken water heater isn’t just a plot point – it’s a deliberate choice that highlights how Ghosts maintains emotional resonance throughout the series. The show emphasizes the importance of the spaces and routines the ghosts share, and cleverly subverts expectations by creating a feeling of loss even though the ghosts themselves aren’t going anywhere.
