3 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Nobody Thinks Can Beat the Original Film

Several sequels planned for 2026—including The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, Minions & Monsters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Godzilla Minus Zero, Violent Night 2, and a third Jumanji movie starring Dwayne Johnson—are generating buzz and could be even better than the originals. Some even predict the new Scary Movie will be as funny, or funnier, than the 2000 hit. Jackass: Best and Last is also anticipated, though its success may depend on how much new footage it includes, as previously unseen material often has a reason for being unreleased.

Some upcoming films just don’t seem to live up to the original, and that’s often because the first one was so great. However, it’s not the only reason. We’ve excluded live-action remakes like Moana, movies set in the same universe but not direct sequels (like Evil Dead Burn), and full reboots like Resident Evil from this comparison.

3) Toy Story 5

While several Toy Story sequels have been made, only Toy Story 3 earned more at the box office than the first film. However, many fans still consider the original to be the best, or rate both films as equally good.

Let’s be real: if even a film as beloved and moving as Toy Story 3 didn’t achieve universal acclaim as the best in the series, then Toy Story 5 probably won’t either. Toy Story 3 felt like a perfect conclusion, while Toy Story 4 seemed more like a way to make more money – a successful one, but still. It’s hard to imagine Toy Story 5 will be any different. That said, having Conan O’Brien involved is definitely a fun surprise!

2) Avengers: Doomsday

It’s hard to say whether Avengers: Doomsday will be what the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to get back on track – Daredevil: Born Again seems to be doing a good job of that for TV shows. It could be a fantastic movie, or it could be overstuffed and rely too heavily on things fans already love. Right now, there’s just no way to know, as very little has been revealed about the plot even after several previews.

The first Avengers movie really represented the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it was fresh and full of energy. Things feel a bit stale now. However, Doomsday is directed by the Russo brothers, who delivered the highly acclaimed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, often considered better than the original Avengers film. Still, Doomsday arrives at a time when the MCU is struggling, and it feels like Disney is simply trying to play it safe with this once incredibly profitable franchise.

1) Super Troopers 3

I firmly believe Super Troopers 2 is a great sequel, despite what many people say. It’s actually better than its reputation suggests. While the jokes about Canada feel a bit outdated and like easy targets, the movie mostly succeeds in recreating the fun, energetic spirit of the original.

The challenge with the second and upcoming third Super Troopers movies is that the first film is so beloved from the early 2000s. The most you can really hope for is to recreate that original magic, but even then, sequels often aren’t as good as the original. However, we’d be thrilled to be proven wrong if Super Troopers 3 turns out to be a fantastic sequel.
