Sam Levinson thinks Euphoria fans are barking up the wrong tree.
Following criticism of a storyline involving Sydney Sweeney in the premiere of Euphoria season three, which aired on April 12th, creator Sam Levinson responded to the concerns.
As a huge fan, I was fascinated to hear from the show’s creator that Cassie’s, shall we say, unique photoshoot – the one with the dogs! – was totally deliberate. Apparently, it was a conscious choice to have that happen inside the really dated house she shares with Nate (Jacob Elordi), especially with their lavish wedding plans underway. It really adds another layer to their whole dynamic, doesn’t it?
Levinson told The Hollywood Reporter that while Cassie’s dog costume – with the dog house, ears, and nose – is funny on its own, the humor really comes from the fact that it’s her housekeeper who is filming the scene.
We always aimed to add another level of unexpected humor, something that would prevent the story from becoming completely lost in the character’s imagination. The joke is to surprise the audience, to remind them it’s not real.
Levinson believed the story wasn’t the only element that would create the desired effect. He and cinematographer Marcell Rév also carefully considered the lighting, feeling it complemented the home’s over-the-top decorations.
We could have gone with a sleek, modern design, but we ultimately chose this house from the mid-20th century,” Rév said. “It’s a bit dated and maybe even a little over-the-top for some, but it offers a lot of potential.”
He acknowledged that matching the visual style of OnlyFans with the show’s look was difficult, saying, “I won’t pretend it was easy.”

Levinson explained that the lighting in certain scenes was very simple – sometimes they only used the ring lights the actress herself used. This created a striking effect: a warm, flattering light when the camera was close, but a sudden, stark contrast when the scene moved outside that light, leaving everything else in darkness. He described the result as unsettling and abrupt.
He explained they aimed to both immerse the audience in her perspective and then step back to reveal the sadness of the situation.
The third season’s first episode not only showed what Cassie and Nate were doing, but also revealed what the other Euphoria characters had been up to since graduating high school.
Rue, played by Zendaya, is working as a drug carrier to pay off a debt to a drug dealer named Laurie, played by Martha Kelly. Meanwhile, Lexi, played by Maude Apatow, and Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, are both trying to launch careers in the entertainment industry, focusing on publicity and television.

The episode included heartfelt memorials for actors Eric Dane and Angus Cloud, even though their characters are still technically part of the show’s storyline. We learned that Cloud’s character, Fezco, is in prison facing a long 30-year sentence after a police raid at his home resulted in his brother’s death. Meanwhile, Eric Dane’s character, Cal Jacobs, will be appearing later in the current season.
With the show leaping forward in time, Levinson explained that it was crucial to both revitalize the series and remain true to the characters’ established journeys.
We operate under the principle that you must adapt to survive,” he explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “We were determined to refresh our approach and make changes.
Levinson explained that they’re letting actors express emotions naturally through their performances, rather than relying on camera techniques to convey those feelings like they often did in the past. The goal was to give the actors more freedom and allow them to create authentic moments on their own.

As a lifelong fan of David Attenborough, I was completely captivated by this documentary. It beautifully combines his very first meeting with a baby gorilla named Pablo with a look at how Pablo’s family is doing now in the mountains of Rwanda. It’s incredible to see both new and old footage, all narrated by Attenborough himself – he even shares entries from his journals from 1978! What really struck me was witnessing gorilla behavior that’s never been captured on film before. It’s a truly special glimpse into their lives.
