The next WandaVision series, planned for 2026, is expected to significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the introduction of its villain. WandaVision was a huge success for Marvel Studios in 2021, giving Wanda and Vision compelling storylines after the events of the Infinity Saga. Now, as the WandaVision story nears its conclusion, the choices being made about the antagonist are generating excitement among fans.
James Spader will return as Ultron in the upcoming Marvel Television series, VisionQuest. This marks Spader’s first time portraying the character since his initial appearance in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ultron has only appeared once more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the animated series What If…?, but that version, voiced by Ross Marquand, existed in a different reality.

For the first time, Marvel Studios is bringing back a villain previously established as a major threat, but with a fresh approach. Instead of battling the entire Avengers team, this villain will face off against Vision (played by Paul Bettany) when he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Robert Downey Jr. is also joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor von Doom in upcoming films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This will be his first time playing the character, and he’s expected to have a major role – potentially as significant as Josh Brolin’s Thanos was in the Infinity Saga – and could become one of the MCU’s most powerful villains.

The character could reappear in the next phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe stories, potentially in a second Fantastic Four movie. This film might also bring back Doctor Doom, but perhaps with a smaller role, emphasizing his long-standing rivalry with Reed Richards as depicted in the comics.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has successfully built up characters gradually before revealing their villainous sides. A prime example is Loki, first introduced in the movie Thor in 2011 and later becoming a major threat to the Avengers in 2012. They tried a similar approach with Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, who appeared as a villain in the first two seasons of the Disney+ series Loki. Kang was intended to be the central villain in the next Avengers movie (originally called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty), but those plans changed after Majors faced legal issues and was removed from the role.
The new Disney+ series, VisionQuest, is scheduled to premiere in late 2026 as part of Marvel’s Phase 6. It will feature Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision, alongside returning cast members James Spader, James D’Arcy, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, and Faran Tahir. The story follows White Vision after he leaves Westview, as he embarks on a quest to recover his lost memories and determine his purpose.
What To Expect From Ultron in VisionQuest

The upcoming VisionQuest series will offer a fresh take on Ultron, revealing James Spader’s character in human form for the very first time, alongside Paul Bettany as Vision. Most of the AI characters in the series are also expected to appear as humans, giving fans a completely new perspective on these heroes – something never before seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The first trailer for VisionQuest, shown privately, offered only a brief glimpse of the plot. It depicted Vision seemingly within a simulation inside his own mind. We also hear James Spader, as Ultron, say, “You’re a ghost haunting her footsteps,” followed by a quick shot of Ruaridh Mollica, who played Tommy Maximoff in WandaVision, appearing on a security camera feed.
Fans are eager for details about this upcoming series and when it will be released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Ultron’s return and a lot of exciting conflict promised, excitement is growing for a long-awaited rematch that’s been over ten years in the making.
