Although a new version of the popular PS4 game Bloodborne isn’t likely in the near future, the series isn’t over. Sony Pictures is creating an animated movie based on Bloodborne, and it’s intended for mature audiences. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s president, Sanford Panitch, announced at CinemaCon that the movie will stay faithful to the original game’s atmosphere and story.
PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and popular online creator JackSepticEye are teaming up to make a movie. Beyond the initial announcement, no further information about the animated Bloodborne project has been released.
Because Bloodborne‘s story is intentionally mysterious—a hallmark of games made by FromSoftware—the upcoming animated adaptation has a lot of freedom to create its own narrative. The movie will probably be set in Yharnam, the game’s main location—a gothic city where people are turning into beasts, and other strange events are occurring. Fans can also expect to see the game’s most famous weapons, such as the Saw Cleaver, Threaded Cane, Kirkhammer, and Ludwig’s Holy Blade. It’s still uncertain whether the adaptation will include story content from the The Old Hunters expansion.
Sony has been actively adapting its popular game franchises for television and film. Following the success of HBO’s The Last of Us, which concluded its second season last May, Sony announced plans for a Helldivers movie. Recent updates reveal that Jason Momoa will star in the film, which is currently scheduled for a November 10, 2027, theatrical release. Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Justin Lin are also involved in the production.
I’m so excited to hear that the Horizon franchise is finally getting adapted for the screen! There were rumors for a while that it might not happen, but the company announced back in January 2025 that they’d actually started early production. It’s being made by PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures, which is awesome! I remember hearing a year ago that it wasn’t going to be a movie anymore, but a TV series instead, and honestly, I think that’s even better!
Sony isn’t alone in turning video games into movies. A24 is also creating a live-action adaptation, this time of the popular game Elden Ring, with director Alex Garland and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin involved. Recently, short videos on TikTok showed glimpses of the set, specifically a crumbling Church of Marika.
Nintendo is continuing to create movies, and their latest release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, recently broke box office records, earning $372.5 million. Although it didn’t open quite as strongly as the first film, it’s still predicted to surpass the original’s total opening week earnings, potentially exceeding $500 million.
