DC Officially Unveils Its 8th Live-Action Green Lantern Ring

DC has just revealed the clearest view yet of a live-action Green Lantern ring, set to appear in their upcoming series, Lanterns. These rings are central to the Green Lantern Corps, acting as incredibly advanced technology that allows users to create whatever they envision, powered by their willpower, focus, and inner strength.

DC Comics has featured several live-action Green Lanterns, and each version has had a different look for the power rings. Now, James Gunn’s new DC Universe is introducing a fresh set of unique rings, adding even more variety to the Green Lanterns’ iconic gear.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO Max this August. 

Every Live-Action Green Lantern Ring 

Justice League of America

The 1997 TV movie Justice League of America featured an early live-action Green Lantern, played by Matthew Settle. Although the movie wasn’t a hit, it did include the iconic power ring. However, due to budget constraints, the ring wasn’t shown off much and appeared to be a simple green band without a lot of detailed metalwork, based on available close-up shots.

Smallville

Despite hinting at the arrival of Green Lantern (Alan Scott) throughout its ten seasons, the CW’s Smallville never actually showed him becoming the hero.

A recent trailer offered a brief look at the ring, generating excitement for the final episodes. Its design appears more robust and traditional – resembling a classic signet ring – than previous versions. This difference is because the ring is now powered by the Starheart, a different energy source than the one used by the Green Lantern Corps.

Green Lantern

Even though the 2011 Green Lantern movie wasn’t a big hit, Ryan Reynolds’ version of the power ring is still memorable. Its design is a smooth, metallic band with a consistently bright, glowing green energy that clearly shows how powerful it is when Hal Jordan fights.

Stargirl

The show Stargirl featured a new take on the classic hero Alan Scott as a member of the original Justice Society. It was also revealed that he has a daughter, Jennie-Lynn Hayden, known as Jade, who later joined the newer team led by Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger).

The ring closely resembles the power ring worn by Alan Scott in the comic books. Its thick, solid band is a nod to the classic, Golden Age style and makes it feel more durable than other power rings.

Superman

Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern ring from James Gunn’s Superman features a modern, all-green aesthetic. 

The device features a large, central gem shaped like the Green Lantern symbol, which lights up whenever Guy uses it in a fight.

Lanterns

John Stewart’s Green Lantern ring, as depicted in the Lanterns comic, has a unique, crystalline design. Notably, it features a series of rings within the main gem, which might suggest a link to the Justice League enemy known as The Centre. The ring also shares visual similarities with Guy Gardner’s ring, sporting a golden border and a central green gem.

BONUS: Arrow

The Arrowverse explored a story arc where John Diggle was offered the chance to become a Green Lantern, but he decided to remain on Earth with his family. The finale of Arrow didn’t directly show the Green Lantern ring itself; instead, it ended with Diggle holding a glowing green box.

BONUS: Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Deleted Scene)

Zack Snyder’s Justice League nearly included a cameo by John Stewart’s Green Lantern, but the idea was eventually cut. A clear image surfaced showing actor Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart, giving fans a look at his costume and Green Lantern ring. The ring maintains the classic all-green design and features a unique Green Lantern gem in the center.
