While the Doctor can journey anywhere in time and space, the show Doctor Who frequently revisits certain periods. It often features stories set in the present day, which is practical for production, though it leads to some amusing repetition – like the Third and Tenth Doctors each visiting a particular decade multiple times. The Doctor also tends to show up at famous historical events repeatedly; there have been several different episodes dealing with the Titanic, for instance.
It’s rare for Doctor Who to return to the same point in the future. While it has happened before – like in the classic story “The Ark,” where the TARDIS visited the same spaceship carrying refugees from Earth twice – it’s not common. Interestingly, Russell T. Davies recently created a three-part story arc that plays with this idea, even bringing back a character who originally died 19 years ago today.
Doctor Who’s Future Story Was All About the End of the World
When Russell T. Davies brought back Doctor Who in 2005, he immediately showed what the show could be. The Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, teamed up with Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, and their first adventure took them to witness the Earth’s destruction. It wasn’t a typical first date – the Doctor showed Rose how her planet was fated to be consumed by the expanding sun! Along the way, they encountered evolved humans like Cassandra, the Face of Boe, and the Moxx of Balhoun, and trouble quickly followed.
The episode “The End of the World” primarily focused on building a strong emotional connection between the Doctor and Rose, and it concluded with the revelation that the Doctor’s home planet, Gallifrey, had been lost in a Time War. Later, in Season 2 of Doctor Who, the story revisited this future timeline when the Face of Boe mentally called the Doctor – and the new Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, along with Rose – to New Earth for another encounter with Cassandra. This was a clever way to show viewers that the show remembered past events, even with a different Doctor.
Today marks nineteen years since Doctor Who last showed us this future. Traveling with Martha Jones, the Doctor returned to New Earth and discovered that New New York was overrun by creatures called the Macra. This visit was different, however. While the Doctor had previously shown a companion humanity’s future on another planet, he initially chose to conceal the destruction of Gallifrey from Martha. That changed after a final meeting with the Face of Boe, who was nearing the end of his life and issued a last, crucial warning.
The Face of Boe’s Arc Set Up the Master’s Return
The Face of Boe was a fascinating character who appeared multiple times in the show. Stories mentioned him as being incredibly old and powerful. His final words to the Doctor – “You are not alone” – served as both a warning and a prediction. He was actually referring to the Master, a classic Doctor Who villain who the Doctor thought had perished in the Time War. In reality, the Master had survived by hiding using a chameleon arch, and cleverly disguised himself as Professor Yana, a playful nod to his last message.
The identity of the Face of Boe was a mystery throughout the third season of Doctor Who, finally revealed in a strange and unexpected way. In the season finale, “The Last of the Time Lords,” the Doctor, Martha, and Captain Jack worked together to defeat the Master in a typically complex time-travel story. As they said goodbye, Captain Jack – who had been exposed to dangerous temporal energy – revealed a surprising truth: he was originally known as the Face of Boe.
One of the best things about time travel stories is that events don’t need to happen in a straight line. The Face of Boe, for example, already knew the Master because he’d previously fought alongside humanity against him, but in disguise. This experience with temporal energy not only extended his life to five billion years, but also changed him physically. As the Face of Boe, Captain Jack fulfilled his destiny, bringing a fantastic three-part story to a satisfying close and hinting at even greater adventures to come.
