While the 1980s were known for memorable horror films, the 1990s also produced a lot of fan favorites. Movies like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, The Craft, and Army of Darkness became hugely popular and really defined the decade. With a remake of one of these classic ‘90s films on the way, many fans are revisiting the original, which is currently available to stream on Tubi.
The 1998 horror film Urban Legend, directed by Jamie Blanks, will soon be removed from the Tubi streaming service. While a specific date hasn’t been announced, the movie is listed as leaving the platform. A reboot of the film is also in the early stages of development at Screen Gems, and was confirmed in April 2025. Urban Legend takes place at a New England college, where students are being killed in ways inspired by common urban legends. The cast includes Alicia Witt, Jared Leto, Rebecca Gayheart, and Robert Englund, and the story follows a journalism student as she investigates a disturbing connection to the murders.
Urban Legend Capitalized on the Post-Scream Slasher Boom
The horror genre was significantly impacted by the release of Scream in the late 1990s. Wes Craven’s 1996 film successfully brought the slasher genre back to life, and Urban Legend was one of many movies that tried to follow its success. While Scream deconstructed horror tropes, Urban Legend applied a similar mystery format to popular urban myths – stories like the killer in the backseat or the warning about turning on the light – which then inspired the movie’s murders, targeting a cast of well-known teen actors from the 90s. The film also started with a shocking opening scene, mirroring the style of Scream, and featured a killer with a personal reason for their actions.
Released in the wake of Scream, the movie Urban Legend cleverly updated classic folklore and spooky campfire stories for a new audience, providing enjoyable entertainment. Despite mostly negative reviews and a lukewarm reception from viewers, it was a financial success, earning over $72 million worldwide on a $14 million budget. While it currently holds low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (31% from critics, 38% from audiences), Urban Legend is still considered a standout horror film from the late 90s. It spawned two sequels, Urban Legends: Final Cut and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, and a reboot is currently in development, marking the first new installment in over two decades.
Where to Stream Urban Legend After It Leaves Tubi?
It’s becoming harder to find the ’90s horror movie Urban Legend on streaming services. Right now, it’s only available to watch for free on Tubi, but it’s unclear if it will stay there. Since streaming services haven’t announced their May lineups yet, it’s possible the movie will move to a different platform. If not, your only options will be to buy a DVD or Blu-ray, or rent or purchase it online.
