The anime based on Kamome Shirahama’s fantasy series is quickly becoming a standout adaptation. Studio BUG FILMS has set a new standard for turning manga into anime, delivering incredible animation and a compelling story, particularly in Episode 3. The main character, Coco, has successfully completed her first witch trial, relying on her courage, limited magical knowledge, and quick thinking.
I’m really enjoying watching Coco learn about magic, and in Episode 4 of Witch Hat Atelier, titled “Meetings in Kalhn,” she gets to pick out her very own wand with Qifrey’s help! Things have calmed down a bit after all the excitement with the Dadah Range, so we’re finally getting a good look at how magic actually works in this world. But I have a feeling this trip to get a wand might turn into something more than just a simple shopping outing.
Where & When to Watch Witch Hat Atelier Episode 4
The anime Witch Hat Atelier is halfway through its first season, with Episode 4 (of 13) adapting Chapter 5 of the original manga. The story will now move to the town of Kalhn, a bustling marketplace where witches can find all kinds of magical supplies.
Episode 4 of Witch Hat Atelier will premiere on Crunchyroll on Monday, April 20th, at 7:00 AM Pacific Time / 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Both subtitled and dubbed versions will be available. It will also stream on Netflix, but only in certain Asian countries.
In the third episode, the story really centered on Coco getting official permission to become an apprentice. Now, with episode four, things will slow down a bit. We’ll have some time to really absorb everything we’ve learned and the story will go back to building out the world and unraveling the secrets that were revealed when Coco first opened that picture book.
Coco Seals Her Fate With Inventive Talents in Witch Hat Atelier Episode 3
The manga’s story was very effective, especially its emotional moments, and this was largely thanks to a few small additions – specifically, flashbacks showing Coco’s mother.
The episode opens with Agott sending Coco off on her journey to the Dadah Range, giving her instructions and explaining the goal. Coco can bring up to three magical tools, called Contraptions, to help her: a guidance orb to find the Diadem Herb, a vapor bubble for water, and Agott’s Sylph Shoes, which allow her to travel through the air.
Coco received a final magical device, and it looked like she was finally prepared. The Sylph Shoes allowed her to fly for the first time, and while soaring through the air, she discovered a creature known as a Brushbuddy. Unfortunately, she accidentally damaged all of her belongings in the process.
Coco felt defeated and started to doubt her magical abilities, wondering if she could ever measure up to her peers who had dedicated their lives to studying magic. But then she remembered a unique skill her mother had taught her, and used it to create a spell of her own.
This is when Coco first shows how talented she is as a witch. Although she lost the tools needed to complete the test like everyone else, this actually allowed her to find her own unique approach to problem-solving.
Coco hadn’t learned to use traditional witch tools yet, so she created something she understood better. Using a pigment stone from her old supplies, she painted symbols of flight onto her cloak, turning it into a sail that would lift her rowboat into the air.
It’s funny, really – Agott expected Coco to fail, but unintentionally provided her with all the tools she needed to thrive.
Coco learned the flight spell by copying it while using Agott’s Sylph Shoes. Agott had previously shown her that the way you draw magical signs affects the results – he’d pointed out a mistake in her work back in Episode 2. Because of this, Coco realized that a complex and unusual drawing would be more helpful than a standard, simple magical seal.
Coco’s flying boat didn’t quite succeed, but she cleverly repurposed the sail as a hang glider, which reminded viewers of her initial appearance in Episode 1. Using this improvised “cloak of flight,” along with her determination to master magic and find her mother, Coco successfully retrieved the Diadem Herb and passed the test.
Qifrey & the Brimmed Caps Dominate the Mysteries of Witch Hat Atelier
Episode 3 of Witch Hat Atelier primarily followed Coco as she experienced her first magical trial and continued to grow. The episode also briefly revealed some backstory about Qifrey, learning through a conversation with the witch Alaira that he has a complex history with the Great Hall.
The Great Hall is the heart of the witch community, making it a practical place for Qifrey and his students to live. However, Qifrey emphasizes that he prefers to avoid it when he can. Meanwhile, Alaira reveals the group Qifrey intends to locate using Coco – the Brimmed Caps, a well-known and feared organization among witches.
The way Qifrey hesitated when Alaira mentioned the Brimmed Caps suggests his grudge against them is deeply personal and hidden. By showing him in shadow, the story hints that there’s a lot more to his friendly and gentle personality than meets the eye.
The mention of the Brimmed Caps also signaled Iguin’s arrival near the end of Episode 3. They were spotted on a floating piece of land in the Dadah Range right after Coco went back to the atelier, suggesting they had been observing her all along. Their only line in the episode, “the seed has sprouted,” hints that Coco’s connection to the magical world is only the first step in a much larger story.
Witch Hat Atelier Episode 3 has Set Up Coco’s Fateful Path
Ignoring the more complex parts of Witch Hat Atelier‘s story, Episode 3 felt mostly positive and uplifting.
Coco faced a difficult struggle that left her feeling hopeless, but she discovered her own inner strength. The third episode beautifully showed how she persevered and shone, and remembering her mother fueled her ultimate success, even though it was mixed with guilt, sadness, and a strong need to correct past mistakes.
When Coco receives her witch’s hat and cloak, it feels like a special initiation she’s rightfully earned. It’s exactly the proud moment Qifrey intended, and a sign of things to come as the story progresses.
Coco is fully dressed as a witch and is now ready for her first wand – a key step in her magical journey that will be shown in Episode 4 of Witch Hat Atelier.
