Pokémon Champions Locks Its Best Features Behind Some Baffling Decisions

Pokémon Champions has several drawbacks that make it more frustrating than truly competitive. While the game’s unusual restrictions offer some new battle scenarios, they’re often implemented in a way that creates unnecessary obstacles for players. Some of these challenges feel strange, especially considering this was meant to be a polished battle simulator, and it’s not always clear how players are supposed to overcome them.

Many people hoped Pokémon Champions would be a good starting point for getting into VGC, which is competitive online battling for the classic turn-based Pokémon RPG. The depth of Pokémon comes from how different types, moves, and evolutions work together, leading to complex team battles that require strategy. While easier to use than sites like Pokémon Showdown, some parts of Pokémon Champions aren’t as simple for new players as they could be.

Pokémon Champions’ Limited Pokédex & Item Restrictions Have Fans In An Uproar

Even before its release, Pokémon Champions received criticism for having a very limited selection of Pokémon – only 186 out of the 1,025 available across the entire series. Although this is more than some of the main Pokémon games offer, it still represents a small fraction of the franchise’s total history. For example, Pokémon Stadium 2 featured 251 Pokémon from the Kanto and Johto regions. While it was expected that not all Pokémon would be included, many fans were disappointed by how many were left out.

Usually, the announcement of new Pokémon coming to Pokémon Champions would calm player worries. However, Nintendo is now linking many of these new Pokémon to ways of spending money in the game. Players will have to use in-game resources – and potentially real money – to get the Pokémon they need for competitive play. Right now, some of the upcoming Pokémon are expected to be so costly to unlock that purchasing them with real money will likely be necessary.

Adding Pokémon to your team in this game relies on a random system similar to loot boxes, where you don’t get to choose which Pokémon you receive. While spending money to get more Pokémon is annoying, Pokémon Champions has other issues too. Key items that help in battles are also locked behind paid features, and are only available to players who buy the Battle Pass. These ongoing, live service elements in Pokémon Champions have upset many fans, as you can see in discussions on sites like Reddit.

Battle Pass Features Create A Grind That Feels Inferior To Other Competitive Titles

It would be okay if the Battle Pass in Pokémon Champions only unlocked cosmetic items for your trainer. It’s better to have style options available through progression than to make important items and Pokémon difficult to obtain. Earning Season Points (SP) is already challenging, as it requires playing tough Ranked Battles against other players. Without ways to earn SP through single-player content, the game becomes too grindy.

To add to the frustration, any rewards you earn through winning or losing are lost when a new season of Pokémon Champions begins. Each season, your Battle Pass and SP are reset, meaning you might lose access to rewards that won’t reappear. For instance, if a valuable item is a top reward in a Battle Pass, you might never be able to get it again if you don’t reach a certain level in that season. This, especially when combined with exclusive rewards like strong Pokémon and Mega Stones available only through the Premium Battle Pass, feels unfair and exploitative.

Lack Of Variety In Pokémon Champions Combines With Technical Issues For A Rough Launch

In Pokémon Champions, it’s really hard to compete without spending money, as many powerful items are locked behind a paywall. This has caused a lot of players to avoid spending any money at all, which limits the variety in online battles. When you play Ranked matches, you often see the same few Pokémon repeatedly, either because they’re easy to get or because they’re simply stronger than the Pokémon most players have access to.

The Ranked matches suffer from several performance problems, making the game frustrating to play. Issues with online communication can significantly slow down battles, drastically increasing the time it takes to earn in-game currency and resources. While some of these problems have existed in previous Pokémon games, the added issues with how the game makes money and its online connection features prevent Pokémon Champions from becoming the deep and engaging battle simulator players were hoping for.

We may adjust how in-game currency works in the future, potentially reducing its role in building strong teams and letting players create their best Pokémon groups without spending money. Currently, though, enjoying Pokémon Champions feels limited by features that unnecessarily block access to the core gameplay that has always made the series fun.
