CinemaCon began Monday in Las Vegas with some big news. StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh and Global Marketing Executive VP Hugh Spearing announced that a new version of a popular film is officially being made.
At CinemaCon, Marsh and Spearing announced several new film projects, including a remake of The Howling, a fourth Paddington movie, and a fresh take on John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. While they confirmed the The Howling remake is happening, they didn’t share any specifics about the cast, director, filming schedule, or release date. Details about the reboot remain unknown.
The Howling Will Be Reimagined by StudioCanal
Directed by Joe Dante, who also made Gremlins, The Howling is a classic werewolf horror film. It’s based on a novel by Gary Brandner and stars Dee Wallace (known from E.T.) as a news reporter. She goes to a remote retreat called “The Colony” to recover after a frightening experience with a serial killer, but soon discovers that many of the other people there are secretly werewolves.
The film The Howling is famous for its incredibly realistic and innovative practical effects, which were unlike anything audiences had seen in horror movies up to that point. The werewolf transformations, created by Rob Bottin and his team, really raised the bar for the genre. Over time, these effects have become even more admired, particularly as modern filmmaking now relies heavily on computer-generated imagery.
The Howling Launched a Horror Franchise
Following the success of the original film, The Howling launched a horror movie franchise. Seven sequels were released between the first film and 2011. For over ten years, fans have heard talk of a reboot, but none of those plans ever materialized. In 2020, director Andy Muschietti (known for It) was said to be working on a remake for Netflix, but that version stalled and appears to have been cancelled.
The original The Howling film remains the most popular in the series. While several sequels followed, none were as well-received by critics. The first film is the only one with a ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes (76%), while all subsequent movies have scored below 30%. The latest sequel, The Howling: Reborn (2011), currently has a rating of just 17%.
A release date has not been announced at this time for StudioCanal’s reboot of The Howling.
