Nicolas Cage, a celebrated actor with a long and diverse career, rarely appears in sequels. Throughout his work, he’s only reprised a few roles, including Benjamin Franklin Gates in the National Treasure films, Johnny Blaze in the Ghost Rider movies, and as the voice of Grug Crood in The Croods. He’s scheduled to return as Spider-Man Noir both in a Prime Video series and the Beyond the Spider-Verse movie. While a sequel to Face/Off has been discussed for some time, those plans have repeatedly been put on hold.
Fans were surprised to learn this afternoon that Nicolas Cage is making a sequel to one of his successful films – and it’s a movie almost no one predicted! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage will work again with writer and director Osgood Perkins on a follow-up to the 2024 occult horror film Longlegs, where he played the serial killer. It’s unexpected not only because of the original film’s storyline (be warned, spoilers ahead!), but also because the sequel will be larger in scope and is now being backed by a different studio.
Nicolas Cage Returning as Longlegs in New Movie

The upcoming film isn’t a direct sequel to Longlegs, but rather takes place within the same world. While Nicolas Cage’s strange and mysterious character is central to the story, a major plot twist reveals his character, Longlegs, commits suicide mid-film. However, the film’s ending and the nature of Longlegs’ crimes suggest his work could continue through another character. Given that Longlegs seems to have been active for many years—the film is set in the 1990s—future stories could explore his past in a prequel, or perhaps someone could be influenced by him even after his death.
Okay, so there’s a big shift behind the scenes with the new Longlegs movie. NEON, the original production company, has passed the torch to Paramount Pictures. Nicolas Cage isn’t just starring, he’s also producing now! Apparently, the filmmakers had a much bigger vision – and budget – than NEON typically handles. Honestly, that news is way more exciting to me than anything about building a Longlegs ‘universe.’ It sounds like they’re really going for something ambitious here, and that’s a good sign.
Despite the original film’s ending, talk of a sequel to Longlegs isn’t unexpected. Longlegs was a huge financial success, earning over $128 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, and a clever marketing strategy by NEON helped build anticipation and mystery. A key element of that success was keeping Nicolas Cage’s character’s face hidden in promotional materials – a bold move that few movies attempt, and one the sequel won’t be able to replicate.
The recently released Longlegs shares a similar strategy with the upcoming Weapons prequel, created by Zach Cregger and Zach Shields. Both films achieved significant success by cleverly concealing their true stories and the actors involved, building audience curiosity. The return of Nicolas Cage, alongside Amy Madigan, might indicate a shift in horror filmmaking, focusing on the audience’s fondness for the villains – a trend reminiscent of iconic 1980s characters like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.
