At CinemaCon, Warner Bros. revealed the complete cast for their new Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum movie. They’ve brought back familiar actors from previous films and also introduced some surprising new additions to the story.
Lord of the Rings unveils full cast, including Aragorn recast
At CinemaCon on Tuesday, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced the cast for their new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis will direct and once again play the character of Gollum/Smeagol. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
Jamie Dornan has been cast as Strider, who is later known as Aragorn, in the upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel. This confirms rumors about who would play the character. Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will also reprise their iconic roles as Gandalf and Frodo Baggins, according to Variety.
The confirmed cast includes:
- Andy Serkis as Gollum/Smeagol
- Ian McKellen as Gandalf
- Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins
- Jamie Dornan as Strider/Aragorn
- Lee Pace as Thranduil
- Kate Winslet as Marigol
- Leo Woodall as Halvard
This movie tells the story of how Gollum was found, taking place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The script was written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, and the film is produced by Peter Jackson, along with Walsh and Boyens.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a huge success, earning about $3 billion globally and winning a total of 17 Academy Awards. The final film, The Return of the King, achieved a historic feat in 2004 by winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. Andy Serkis’s performance as Gollum, using innovative motion-capture technology developed by Weta Workshop, was groundbreaking for digital effects in filmmaking.
In 2024, New Line Cinema brought audiences back to Middle-earth with the animated film, The War of the Rohirrim. The studio is also making the third season of the Prime Video series, The Rings of Power.
