Scrubs, a funny and heartwarming hospital drama, ran for nine seasons from 2002 to 2010. The show followed the careers of medical interns – played by Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison – as they learned and grew into fully qualified doctors.
The show returned earlier this year with Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison reprising their roles as JD, Elliot, and Turk. John C. McGinley, as their boss Perry Cox, and Judy Reyes as head nurse Carla, also returned to film new episodes at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The show has done well since it came back, but it’s still unclear if there will be another season. Creator Bill Lawrence and 20th Television, who helped bring the show back, haven’t made any announcements yet.
So will we see more of JD and the gang? Here are all the updates on a potential Scrubs season 2.
Will there be a second season of Scrubs?

I was so excited when Scrubs came back for a tenth season! It was a bit shorter than usual, with only nine episodes, and the last one actually aired on Thursday, April 16th. It felt good to see those characters again, even if it was just for a little while.
While a second season hasn’t been officially announced, the actors are optimistic. John C. McGinley, who reappeared in episode 8, believes there’s still much to explore with his character, Dr. Cox, who is dealing with an autoimmune illness.
He believes Cox’s character will have a larger role in the second season. He noted the strong fan reaction to the character has been very encouraging. He also explained that, from a storytelling perspective, he’s drawing inspiration from the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell and the way stories are structured.
He went on to explain that for Zach’s character to work as a hero—following the structure seen in many stories—there needs to be real stakes and danger. He felt the absence of Ken Jenkins and not enough of the Janitor meant the main threat this season should be the interns failing, which he thought was a good idea.
He needs a real challenge with significant stakes. There needs to be genuine risk, and it looks like Cox will provide that, however the story unfolds. I suspect Cox will play a much larger role in the next season, but this is just my guess.
Zach Braff, the star of the show, has said he’d like to see another season that includes more of John, and a return appearance from Neil Flynn as the hospital janitor.
Zach Braff acknowledged that fans are disappointed the show only had nine episodes and felt there was more story to tell. He understands viewers want to see more of characters like Johnny, Neil, and Carla, and confirmed they are exploring options to continue the story.
If the show gets picked up for a complete season, we’re hoping to bring back Neil regularly and have Johnny appear much more often,” Braff explained. “We want fans to know we share their enthusiasm for seeing more of those characters.
When could a potential Scrubs season 2 be released?

The show’s return was officially confirmed in July 2025, and filming took place in Vancouver from October to December of the previous year.
If the show follows the same timeline as the first season, we can likely expect news about its renewal very soon. If renewed, filming might begin later this year, with the new season possibly premiering in spring 2027.
Who could star in Scrubs season 2?

It seems likely that Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison – who played J.D., Elliot, and Turk – would reprise their roles if the show gets a second season. Other popular cast members, like John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox, Judy Reyes as Carla, Christa Miller as Jordan (Dr. Cox’s ex-wife), and Neil Flynn as the Janitor, are also expected to return.
Honestly, getting everyone’s schedules to line up might be tough. Zach Braff is directing another season of ‘Rooster’ with Steve Carell, and Judy Reyes is busy with season three of ‘High Potential,’ so we’re hoping they can make it work!
What will happen in Scrubs season 2?

I recently heard from Zach Braff that he’s actually been thinking about where things could go with JD and Elliott’s story. It sounds like he has some ideas brewing, which is exciting for fans of Scrubs who’ve always rooted for them!
What I’m seeing with these two characters is a really interesting friendship slowly developing, but it’s definitely not easy. Anyone who’s been through a similar situation knows that even when you realize a romantic relationship isn’t working, it still stings to see an ex move on. That’s going to be a major hurdle for them, and I think their connection will keep changing as they navigate it. There’s a genuine respect there, both as medical professionals and as parents, which is a solid foundation for whatever their relationship becomes.
He also mentioned the show will delve deeper into the personal lives of the cast. They weren’t able to share much about the children due to the limited number of episodes, but plan to in the future. He explained they want to explore all sides of relationships, including how couples navigate divorce – whether it leads to animosity or, surprisingly, a strong friendship as they co-parent. That’s the path the show is taking.
