HBO is actively expanding the world of Game of Thrones, but one planned spin-off series has been cancelled after several years of work. Since the original series ended in 2019, the network has been carefully considering new stories set in Westeros, taking a more measured approach than some other franchises. Currently, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have aired, and other projects are still in the works, including an animated prequel focusing on Corlys Velaryon called The Sea Snake, and 10,000 Ships, which tells the story of Princess Nymeria.
Warner Bros. also announced a Game of Thrones movie at CinemaCon. Currently called Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the film will be set 300 years before the original series, showing how Aegon Targaryen and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their dragons to conquer Westeros and establish their dynasty. With the movie now confirmed, it’s likely that plans for a separate Aegon’s Conquest TV series have been cancelled.
Could The Aegon’s Conquest TV Series Still Be Saved?

In 2024, reports surfaced that Mattson Tomlin, the writer behind The Batman, was working on a TV series about Aegon’s Conquest. HBO has been developing the show ever since, with Tomlin steadily making progress. Around the same time, Warner Bros. began developing a movie based on the same story, with Beau Willimon (known for House of Cards and Andor) at the helm. The plan was to develop both projects and then choose the stronger one. Now, it’s clear which version has been selected – though it’s possible elements from both could be combined.
The movie has a lot of potential, given the popularity of the TV show and the plans for more related series. Warner Bros. is looking for big movie franchises, and exploring Game of Thrones on the big screen is a smart business move. If they do that, focusing on the Targaryen dynasty and dragons is a natural fit – it’s familiar to fans and offers impressive visuals. A film about Aegon’s Conquest would likely be a large-scale production, similar in scope to Dune. When considering box office returns, either Aegon’s Conquest or Robert’s Rebellion would be the most logical choice for the first movie.
While the specific Aegon I Targaryen show that was originally planned might not happen, a TV series about him is still possible, especially if the upcoming movie does well at the box office. Success could lead to sequels or a TV show exploring more of his rule. An even more exciting option would be a series called ‘Sons of the Dragon,’ which would focus on the power struggles following Aegon’s death – a really interesting part of George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood.
Let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. While Warner Bros. has hinted at the film as part of their future plans, it doesn’t have a confirmed release date. Considering there’s no director or cast chosen and the film is likely to be large in scope, 2028 seems like the earliest possible release. However, if the movie is a success, we could see even more stories about Aegon in the future.
Game of Thrones is available to stream on HBO Max.
