DC Kills an Iconic Batman Hero (& Makes Absolute Batman the Villain)

Things are getting even tougher for Batman. Not only is one of his key allies gone, but Bruce Wayne is being blamed! The “Absolute Batman” series has been following a new take on the Dark Knight for over a year, and it’s been a rough ride. He’s battled dangerous foes like Black Mask and faced the horrors of Ark M, with one challenge after another. Bruce has managed to survive, but he’s beginning to understand that his fight for justice comes at a significant cost.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Bruce Wayne lately, especially after the whole Bane situation. It really seemed to hit him hard that being Batman was actually harming the people he cared about – his friends were never quite the same after Bane’s attack. So, while stopping Poison Ivy, he made this really tough call to distance himself from everyone, thinking he could protect them by going completely solo as Batman. But then, something terrible happened – an unexpected death proved that even with the best intentions, things aren’t always so straightforward. It was heartbreaking to see, and it made me realize how complicated being a hero can be.

Absolute Batman Kills Off Jim Gordon (And Batman is Taking the Blame)

In Absolute Batman #19, written by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin, and lettering by Tom Napolitano, Bruce Wayne has been recovering from his battle with Bane for weeks. While the people of Gotham admire Batman’s resistance to the city’s established order, the authorities are still determined to capture him. Bruce is managing to stay hidden thanks to help from Alfred and Harley Quinn, along with the Red Hood gang, but the sinister Absolute Joker is secretly plotting his own moves.

Batman met with Jim Gordon to discuss confidential files concerning Bruce Wayne. However, Gordon was behaving strangely and seemed very paranoid, even attempting to destroy the files before Batman could review them. Although Batman managed to save parts of the documents, Gordon’s erratic behavior continued – he started fleeing from crows and tragically fell from the building where they were meeting. Batman tried to rescue him, but couldn’t, and witnesses mistakenly believed Batman was responsible for Gordon’s death.

Mayor Hamilton Hill quickly uses the rumor to publicly denounce Batman, officially accusing him of murder in a city-wide address. However, the address isn’t just about Batman; Hill also introduces Slade Wilson, an ally of Jack Grimm IV (the Absolute Joker), who is leading a new project called the Robin Program. This program, funded by the Joker, recruits young people from shelters previously supported by Grimm, and, according to Wilson, aims to provide Gotham with reliable heroes while eliminating those considered problems – specifically, Batman.

Gordon’s Death is a Major Turning Point for Absolute Batman

I was hoping the Scarecrow’s first appearance involved Bruce Wayne being affected by Fear Toxin, making Gordon’s death seem unreal. However, Barbara’s reaction to the news and the way it’s being used to launch the Robin Program confirm it’s actually happened. While Scarecrow was clearly responsible for Gordon’s erratic behavior – we even see Crane watching it unfold – it’s less about harming Gordon and more about Scarecrow trying to damage Batman’s reputation with the citizens of Gotham.

Scarecrow is one of the villains working for the Joker, who has repeatedly shown his desire to eliminate Batman. However, the Joker realizes simply killing Batman isn’t enough. He previously tried using Bane, but Batman still managed to win. Now, instead of trying to kill Batman outright, the Joker is attempting to ruin Batman’s reputation, hoping to replace him with a group of heroes the Joker can manipulate.

It’s uncertain if the Joker’s latest plan will succeed, but he’s definitely landed two major blows against Batman. Bruce is already vulnerable, convinced that his role as Batman is hurting the people he cares about. Losing Gordon just confirms his fears. Now, the whole city believes Batman is a killer. While Batman insists he doesn’t need public support, it will be much harder to protect Gotham from its biggest dangers when everyone sees him as the enemy.
