Stephen King adaptations are noticeably improved compared to those from a few decades ago. They now benefit from bigger budgets, more development time, better actors, and greater overall effort. Unlike the past, when his stories often led to quick sequels or low-budget TV miniseries, adaptations are now of higher quality. Streaming services, especially Netflix, have played a large role in this improvement, becoming a major force in horror and specifically in bringing King’s work to the screen. Although the Duffer brothers’ planned adaptation of The Talisman was cancelled, Netflix’s next King project will be a remake of his classic 1983 monster movie, Pet Sematary.
As a big Stephen King fan, I’ve always found Cujo to be particularly chilling. It’s based on his 1981 novel and tells the story of Cujo, this huge, normally friendly Saint Bernard who gets bitten by a rabid bat. Things quickly go downhill, and he starts terrorizing the town of Castle Rock, Maine, attacking anyone and everyone – even people he used to love. The story really ramps up when a woman and her young son are stranded at a repair shop and Cujo traps them inside their car. It becomes a desperate fight for survival as they’re stuck in the sweltering heat, with Cujo circling and hunting them from outside.
A Netflix Original Adaptation Is Exactly What Cujo Needs
Over the last decade, Netflix has become a popular choice for high-quality horror movies and TV series. They’ve built a reputation for scary and addictive stories, from acclaimed series like Midnight Mass to their newest releases, such as Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
Netflix has successfully adapted several Stephen King stories in the past, with films like Gerald’s Game, 1922, and Mr. Harrigan’s Phone proving popular with viewers. Now that Mike Flanagan, the director behind those adaptations, has moved to Amazon Prime Video, Netflix will need to produce equally compelling movies to maintain its strong track record with King’s work.
Netflix consistently delivers high-quality adaptations of Stephen King’s work, putting in the necessary effort, budget, and attention to detail. While HBO Max’s IT: Welcome to Derry boasted a strong cast and compelling story, viewers were let down by its subpar special effects. Their adaptation of Salem’s Lot also fell short, proving to be a lackluster and unengaging version of King’s novel. In contrast, Netflix’s King adaptations have been faithful to the source material, well-crafted, and truly stand out.
Although the 1983 film builds to a very intense climax, it’s now over 40 years old and feels a little old-fashioned, and some of the more disturbing details have been toned down. Releasing it directly on a streaming service means the filmmakers don’t need to worry about test audiences or box office results. Given Stephen King’s popularity and the fact that this is a Netflix original, Cujo is likely to be a huge streaming hit.
Cujo Will be One of the Next Stephen King Film Adaptations to Release
Details about the upcoming remake of Cujo are scarce, but it’s being produced by Roy Lee, a well-known name in horror. He’s worked on popular titles like Bates Motel, The Ring, and Barbarian, as well as critically acclaimed films such as IT, Doctor Sleep, The Long Walk, and IT: Welcome to Derry.
Currently, no director is officially signed on for the film Cujo, but surprisingly, Darren Aronofsky has been discussing the possibility of directing it. Aronofsky is usually known for different types of films, so seeing him tackle a scary, creature-based thriller would be a departure for him.
Besides Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie series and the second seasons of The Institute and IT: Welcome to Derry, there aren’t many adaptations of Stephen King’s work currently in production. The Duffer brothers, known for Stranger Things, initially planned a Netflix series based on The Talisman, but they decided against it, feeling the story was too complicated to translate to the screen.
A movie adaptation of Stephen King’s 2022 novel is in the works with A24, and Paul Greengrass will produce. Currently, it’s unclear where the film will stream, but Cujo appears to be the next major King adaptation heading to theaters.
